Polaris Swaybar Disconnect

Postby ACLakey » Wed Nov 23, 2005 9:38 am

For all you rock crawlers here is a great and easy way to increase your suspension travel for the rough stuff.

I have a buddy that did this mod and is VERY pleased in the resulting suspension travel and added traction in the tough stuff. What do you think.

I have looked at those allot and was concerned that the clip would sheer off when the sway bar was hooked up. There is a reason there is a 5/16" bolt and not a 1/8" bolt as set-up by polaris.
The other thing is when it is disconnected you have to keep it under 25 MPH because it gets very squirrelly. It would be fun to try even if I just take out the bolts and no do the mod.

I love the concept however totally agree with Mr. Bill. The higher speeds get pretty squirrelly.

I wonder how it handles in big water puddles....

You know the other thing is that clip would sheer just when you are in the middle of a 40MPH hard pac road turn.

I see your points, but the bulk of the force is not in tension and is not on the pin. Basically the sway bar would have to be pulled straight up and put the pin under a shear load in order for the pin to fail. I will look at a polaris setup more closely and get a feel for the loads. I almost an identical setup on a jeep and never had any problems. I know the jeep produced much higher stresses than a quad could.

I think some of the Artic Cat machines don't have sway bars....and have herd that they are unstabill at higher speeds??? I have herd of the disconects, what would be good is having something that would make the rear end/swaybar even stifer to elimanate body roll.. for fire roads for example, something ajustable. make the machine more like a solid axle.

I've got the swaybar dissconnect mod and it works great for rock crawling. You can't ride over 30 mph because it gets unstable. I have not tried it in the mud so I can't comment on that. I have had it on for about a year with no problems.

Don't grind your stock bolt. I'd try a different bolt for your clip point.

My only concern is the 30 mph issue. When do you "not" go over 30 mph sometime in a ride? I think if you add the 30 mph issue and ITP 589's your asking for a really squirrelly and possibly dangerous ride......

When I use it is at the Tellico orv and its all rock crawling and you don't ever get over 30 mph untill you come to the gravel road. When I get to the gravel road I hook it back up and it only takes just a min.
