Unfortunately, some users may ignore restriction or have poorly maintained equipment which is cause for concern and underscores the need for educational efforts.
I don't see how saying don't start those ATVs educates anyone. What a bunch of crap.

This was my response to their letter, I borrowed a bit of commentary from our Utah State Parks OHV Director used in his letter to them when he found out about this PSA.
Amy in typical governmental bureaucratic white washing of the issue you people have glazed over our complaint about this PSA.

Our complaint is the WAY the message is delivered and it's resulting impression on the general public of ATV riders and their machines.

You say NOTHING about the required spark arresting equipment or maintenance. You simply say "ATVS will start a fire if started." This in it's self is a FALSE message and does nothing to educate people about the need to properly maintain the machine as you claim your PSA is doing in this letter. The PSA does not convey the need for anything other than to not operate the ATV, period, end of message.

Do not think for a minute we have failed to see the portrayal of a "politically correct" young lady on a "bicycle" who is well dressed, very polite, attractive, wearing all the proper protective equipment, etc having to correct the behavior of a couple of rather unkempt, slovenly, dumb-looking ATV riders. This in it's self is insulting to the ATV riding public.

quote:
In its present configuration, this ad is most certainly not a "Public Service Announcement" but is a blatant, malicious attack on motorized recreation and the millions of responsible American families who safely and responsibly ride ATVs, and appears to be more directed at advancing an "anti-motorized" political agenda than at educating the public. The Ad Council, the USDA Forest Service, and the National Association of State Foresters should be embarrassed by this ad.

We as the ATV riding public have decided to escalate this issue to higher levels of our government and will State by State be contacting every member of the US Senate and House of Representatives demanding pressure is brought upon those involved to pull this POS PSA, in its current form, from circulation.

We have also begun a campaign to contact the media to insist they not air this PSA as well as putting pressure upon the manufacturing associations of these machines to put their legal and financial might behind our demand this PSA be removed from circulation in it's present form.

We have NO objection to a properly formatted and educational PSA that does as you seem to claim in your letter, educate the ATV riding public to the need for proper equipment maintenance and the need to retain the mandated safety equipment, i.e. the proper exhaust and spark arrester, and to be aware of their surroundings when operating these machines. This PSA does NOT do that nor does it do anything you claim in this letter.

Sincerely
Gary Bushman

RedGrizz and I were riding out by Poker Flat yesterday when he had a brilliant idea: do a response video to the Ad Council's silly PSA. We gave up a day of riding (today) to shoot and edit this. Thanks to my wife for playing the leading lady:

so much about this PSA was AWESOME but what did get by me
was the sign inbetween RedGrizz & you it's hard to tell but im thinking
it's telling the fire danger is high

Now the other part of this that is totally great is when the Mrs. pulls out the good ole match and light's up then throws the match which in fact is much more truthfull to how fires get started by peoples actions

Smokin Bear was so right only you can prevent forest fires

and by the way * Smokin Bear was kick ass cool !!!!! :D

way to go all of you !!! Great Job

Well what do you know, RedGrizz noticed that the Ad Council removed their video from YouTube. Click their link:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cowvlUmXMvQ

and it says "This video has been removed by the user". Maybe all the complaints made them change their mind?

As with most issues in the liberial agenda, you should not accept the underlying premis of the add. I would seriously question if 88% of all the land that is burned is caused by man. They play with data to come up with figures that fit their play book. I don't know the answer, Maybe we cause 88 % of the fires, but the ones that start way in the back country with lighting burn the most acreage. I live and work in the belly of the liberal beast, and they truly believe their "noble" ends justify any means necessary. Challenge their data, and your usually win. Keep up the OUTSTANDING work and vigilance......tim
