Nice fall day - Bowman area

Postby hemingray » Sun Oct 18, 2009 9:00 am

I can't seem to leave this area alone, even with that hideous road. But after last week's rains, it's really nice with no dust and a really fresh feeling. Lots of fallen branches and trees - I pulled 4 out of the way in various spots.

First - some flowers were blooming right along the road. Strange - they seem to be out of touch with the season!

The colors jump out - very bright.

Canyon Creek (below Faucherie) is very placid.

What a great little canyon just upstream.

Found this along the road - only one I've ever seen.

Last trip, I was at the top of the notch canyon on English Mountain. Impressive sight, from both place!

Secret Lake

As the afternoon wore on, the lighting really shows off the color.

Coming back up towards Meadow Lake from the meadows, there was a nice partial sundog.

Red Mountain, across Bowman Lake, with the late afternoon light.

Definitely a fall sky over Bowman. Note the boat in the foreground!

I really like the two cloud photos and the one with the little tree bending over. That one reminds me of a place I was recently at in Yosemite. Actually there are several places in that general area that remind me of Yosemite. All that granite I guess.

Nice picture! Yosemite definitely defines the Sierra.

English Mountain is an interesting geological find - made up of granite on one side, and at least one source says the other is made up of bedrock pushed up to great heights. Secret Lake perches on the granite side and would probably be a great picture in the right lighting. That day's picture was in the afternoon and cloudy, and this time of year probably doesn't get a good enough sun angle to make a nice shot. It's on my list for next summer!

(I'm not a geologist by any means, but the makeup of the Sierra in this area is fascinating. If Yosemite is dominated by granite, our part of the Sierra has the same granite, along with bedrock, andesitic lahars (volcanic mudflows), glacial till, slate and the ancient riverbeds which defined the gold rush, revealed in a mozaic of mountains.)
