That looks like a cool movie GG. I went 80% into the trailer before I saw a train, but stations, are also very cool. There are a lot of restored ones around here that are fun to see. I don't chase trains to photograph them, but I love stopping at crossings for trains, which really drives my wife crazy. She don't like waiting for anything. I wonder where I might get that movie. Would it be too obscure for blockbuster.
You make the map, and we can be there. I may buy a small enclosed trailer for the trip across. I could probably spend a lot of time, riding ATVs around your place, and looking at trains. Two of my most favorite things, together.

Yeah Trainman, I probably should have said that it is a movie about a train lover, and not so much about trains themselves. I don't want to give it away, but it starts out with the star (train lover) working in a model train store. Events unfold and trail lover inherits an old train station along an active track. He moves to train station, is kind of a recluse who just wants to pursue his train interest (watching trains, reading about trains, etc.)... but soon finds that everyone wants to be his friend and do what he does. Drama happens, including some suspense involving actual trains, fun movie. :)

It's an indie film so I don't know if it would make it to Blockbuster or not. But they may run it again on IFC.

Hey, wait until I tell you about our snow sheds. Yup, lots of those out here. As far as I know, the access roads to them are legal forest service routes. :-)

Full disclosure: my short ride along the tracks probably wasn't kosher. I took a wrong turn, found myself up there, and on the way back... a guy in a train company pickup (track maintainer?) gave me a dirty look. I smiled, waved, and continued on through the tunnel. Based on his reaction, I guess I should have zigged through the tunnel and not zagged up to the tracks in the first place. :-)

Actually, a good friend gave me a box full of TRAINS magazine. The December 2006 has a two page map about the Donner Pass Showsheds. Very cool map. So I Googled DP showsheds, and actually got some pictures, and video of trains emerging from tunnels and sheds. That's another reason that area looks interesting to me. Just stay out of those tunnels and sheds with trains around. The score would be the same as that dope trying to run over the couch.

Netflix has it listed if you subscribe to that, and I imagine that since it is indie, you'll get it pretty quickly.

Well I'll be danged, I think Trains magazine is what the star of that film was reading in his train station. :)

Here is my ride track on a topo, and I marked the various snow sheds and Donner Pass. I didn't try to ride to a snow shed, but now you've got me curious: I'll have to see if I can next season. Hopefully they don't have the access roads gated off. Where I took the wrong turn and rode along the tracks is under the word "TUNNEL" in my waypoint.

Uh, well, back when I was young and stupid... I kind of learned that lesson the hard way. Being a train guy, you may have heard of our Cuesta Grade which is down by San Luis Obispo where I went to college. There is a big long tunnel going through the top of that thing. It is a big grade on either side, and they have to put on extra engines to pull the trains up and through the tunnel.

So one day a few of us country boys are sitting around in the freshman dorm, with nothing to do, so we decide to hike on up there and take a look at the tunnel. Didn't seem to be any trains around, so into the tunnel we go. I was leading for some reason.

We get almost to the halfway point of the tunnel, and I see what looks like a flashlight beam moving around at the far end. I hear this faint rumble sound, but figured it was just the traffic down on Hwy 101. We keep going.

Then the flashlight beam gets brighter, the rumble gets louder, and it hits me: there is a TRAIN coming up from the other side! I turn and yell "TRAIN! RUN!" at the guys behind me. They turn and start running, and I turn and start running, and we were all running as fast as our feet could carry us.

I can now hear the multi-engine train bearing down on us. The 3 guys in the lead make it out of the tunnel. I see Brian (ahead of me) turn his head back, a look of terror comes on his face, and he dives, fully prone, for the edge of the tunnel. He splashes down in the water/gunk down there. Not wanting to even turn my head, I just do what Brian did: I dive, splash down, take a deep breath, and shove my face down into the water. Trying to get as low as possible.

The sounds were freaky. I hear the engines come by, sounds like they are now braking the train (must have spotted us) but worse yet... I hear metallic pieces of train (cargo straps?) scraping against the tunnel walls. I'm thinking that the end will be nasty. One of those scraping things will first castrate me, then kill me, and I'm just hoping it all happens fast.

This goes on for minutes, seems like hours. Finally the end of the train goes by, and Brian and I dash out of the diesel-exhaust-filled tunnel. Our friends are standing there with the widest eyes I've ever seen. They were sure we were dead until that moment. A guy is standing on the caboose deck yelling at us (train still moving) and we all just bolted. We must have ran double-time all the way back down to our dorm.

Brian went on to fly helicopters for the USMC and still says that day was the scariest day of his life. I agree. So no more active train tunnels for me. Nope, not ever.

Well I shit you not Ken, had there been any crap in my system at that point, it would have been flowing down my legs. That's how scared I was. Petrified. Terrified. Neat lesson I learned: NO, 19-years-old <> Invincible. In case yours are getting to that age...

What a hoot, I googled Cuesta Grade and found this on a train lover's site:

http://www.railroadforums.com/forum/sho ... hp?t=17965

Yup JBass99, just hike right on up Poly Canyon. Free Advice: When you get up there, stay out of the fawking tunnels!

Now that I think about it, there is more than one tunnel up there. We just never saw the others because the train ran our dumb asses out of the first one.

Yeah KaTz, two open questions remain from those days:

1) How did we manage to live through all the stupid stuff we did?
2) How come we didn't get expelled, thrown in jail, etc. from doing all the stupid stuff we used to do?

So you went to Slo town....I saw the first Niner superbowl there. 1982. My friend Jim, when to horticulture school there. I also came down twice for Poly Royal.

I think it was called the Miracle Mile, for birthday drinking. And I remember the gum wall....no clue if that stuff is still there.

Hah! If you were at Poly Royal in 1983, you didn't happen to have any water balloons come hurtling down out of the sky, from where you didn't know, at a velocity high enough to knock you flat down onto the sidewalk, did you? Cause if you did... sorry man.

No worries, Kendo. I'm older and at least a little less stupid now. "Oh no, not me, YOU go first" is now one of my favorite sayings. Just ask Larry if you don't believe me. :D

So many targets, so little time.

But that was one hell of a party, eh? We used to call it "Party Royal". Rule #1: never volunteer to man one of the displays, do meet-and-greet, help your department head, or any of that. Such activities would only interfere with your duty to consume as much alcohol as possible in a 48-hour period. Dry campus? Wha? Huh?

Wow GG. That is amazing. You are LIVING proof (thankfully) to the saying "be careful, the light at the end of the tunnel might just be the train coming at you."
Seriously, video around some of those tunnels would really be interesting. Just don't tangle with a train or the score will be Trains=1 Grizzly Guy=0. Google Donner Pass snow sheds, and eventually you will get some camera and video sites that probably will look familiar to you, like when you were 19.
