Video - Sierra Crest

Postby GrizzlyGuy » Mon Sep 10, 2007 10:02 pm

I managed to squeeze my video gear onto the racks during my second 2-day solo trip into Plumas NF. Most of the video is from County Route 800, County Route 900, past the A-Tree on 23N08B, and up by the summit of Mt. Etna on 22N16X.

Music by fellow Grizzly rider Vulcan.

Yeah, I know Ken. I'm practically an eco-terrorist by letting my Bighorns actually contact all that precious and senstive dirt and rocks!

But dang, if you want to see a real-life ecological disaster out in a national forest, just ride into the Plumas Diggings area that is just east of La Porte out in Plumas. Right around these landmarks:

I'm not even an environmentalist, and I was dumbfounded by what all that old mining did to the area. I camped on Slate Creek down in that area, and drank the creek water after filtering it, but was still a little worried about what might be dissolved in it. :?

As to the video equipment, I use 2 Sony HC-96's running continuously while riding. One records from a helmet cam on my head, and one from another helmet cam mounted somewhere else on the quad (usually on the left side of the front rack). Then I have a 3rd HC-96 that I place on the ground, like in the drive-over scenes or inside the mine shaft that I rode by.

If my buddy is riding with me, then we have a 4th recorder and helmet cam that we'll usually put on his quad. For Granite and Grunge, we mounted it down low looking backward and got what I think are some pretty good shots of the mud holes. :)

Here is info on how I carry the cameras on the ATV. Here is info on how I do it for skiing. The boot cam shot is really cool by the way, see my Shredding Northstar video for an example.

Oh, and I even built a wireless helmet cam system. But it didn't work out that well as the follow-up post describes. So I am now back to being fully wired.
:(

I may resurrect the wireless cam system so as to lower it down into this mine shaft up by Mt. Etna, which seemed to be about 150 feet deep based on how long it took my rocks to hit the metallic stuff at the bottom:

I'm dying to know what is down there. That shaft is right next to where I did the drive-overs for the beginning and ending of that video.

Hey Grizzly Guy, could you giv me a reference on a Google map or something where exactly these trails are and where one would park the tow rig. I would love to go check out the area this fall with a couple of buddies. I looked around la porte on the map but dont see the roads you spoke of. TIA :D

Pepe,

Do you have a mapping program that can accept GPX (GPS Exchange) files? Like Google Earth or ExpertGPS? If so, I've got several GPX files that show all those trails plus more. If you PM me your E-mail address, I can send you the files.

My master file for Tahoe and Plumas NF's is now up to 3700 waypoints and I have all of the interesting Plumas trails drawn in it as tracks, color-coded for difficulty. Much of Tahoe is also drawn in, but I'm still working on finishing all of them.

I've also taken the Plumas tracks and made a GPS map that can be loaded into Garmin mapping GPS units. This makes it real easy to navigate, as you see the trails on your screen as colored lines as you ride around. :)

If you don't already have a mapping program that can do GPX format, I recommend picking up a copy of ExpertGPS. It will be the best $60 you ever spent:

This is what my file looks like in ExpertGPS:

The opening and closing shots in this video plus the two photos of the vertical mine shaft were shot at ETNAVSHAFT, for example. Or, you could download these maps from Plumas NF:

http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/plumas/projects ... n/maps.php

I started with those maps, then plotted all the roads/trails into ExpertGPS by eyeballing them on the aerial photos. You can also get a really good paper OHV map for free from the Plumas ranger stations.

I've been unloading and starting my rides at this point, which is behind the Beckwourth ranger station off of 89/70 (on F23N37):

39.795N
120.66738W

I just have a small trailer, a large one wouldn't fit in there. I'm lousy at recommending toyhauler-friendly roads, just ask Kendo.
