GPS/ Topo

Postby redcat » Tue Oct 10, 2006 9:54 am

Ok, I broke the old gps and am looking for a new one. I want to get a mapping gps that has the capability of detailed national forest roads and back country features (lakes, streams, camping etc...).

Any suggestions?

oldtrucks and I have the magellan Explorist XL and love it. . .

it comes with a base map that SUCKS, but you can purchase the mapSend Topo US that comes with it and the details of that is great. You can pick and choose what you want to update from there.

this can get pricy though as you have to buy the unit and the nthe software to really make it worthwhile. I personally purchased my software on eBay for 69.99, where it reatails for 149.99. . . the difference is I had to get the CD 1.00 version where the 149.99 is the 1.06 DVD version

I'm very pleased with the Explorist XL, took some time getting it all sorted out, but with the Topo 3D software it's awesome. Huge color screen is easy to see in all conditions. Whatever you decide, try and find something that has an SD card so you're not limited to the internal storage.

One additional note if you do go with this unit, you can get the car charger cord as well. You actually can get the charger for hte Explorist 600 as it is the same charger, it just plugs into your current USB cable that is provided. makes for a great way to save your batteries if you ride with it on the quad.

......and Ram Mount makes a rock solid mount for it as well. Easy to install and about as secure a mount as you'll see.......second of course only to the BearCat One Off Custom

Larry did you settle with using the new 3-D program in the field or did you go with the older Mapsend version?

Brad I'm using both. In the national forest the roads are far better in the newer 3D version, out in Nevada the older version is best. Not sure why they did that, but I'm sure glad Jerry was able to come up with that older version for the XL, it works great out in Mina That's the beauty of the SD card, I have the Western US covered, twice, and still have plenty of storage

Try here, http://www.compuplus.com/i-Magellan-eXp ... h49ly5fv34
I bought mine last week, and got the 3d topo software for $10 here

You have to call customer service at magellan, e-mail them a copy of your recipt and then they give you the unlock code for the software. You download it onto your harddrive. I really like the unit. Especially the large screen, easy on my old eyes.
