Bad Day at work
I had a metal grinding issue awhile back on sharp left turns, sounded like it was the bearings... so take them out re-pack um... noise is gone for a day... i use the trailer for work still for1 week (ya ya i know). I then change the bearings out, yup one of them had rub marks on it and was missing 1-2 of the rollers. I put back on and no noise. 1 day later noise is back faintly... i just keep working i needed to work and didnt know what to do??
So now where at today, where yup my bearings busted out, Ive carried much larger loads before but i admit i did have from 1-2 tons.
Im just going to replace the whole axle since i have no idea whats causing this... in less some one else has some idea what i should look for? I have no qualms about wrenching on it i just dont know what it could be but time is of the essence. Any one have any ideas on anything i should check?

Did the races spin on the axle? Is the hub out of round? Your hub looks like it's been hit - out of round would kill bearings really quick....

the races are what the bearings sit /ride on inside the hub. they can be replaced but you really need a new hub!!! allso check the spindle it might be shot now to!Mr. Green wrote:hmm not sure what the races are?

If you didn't replace the races when you replaced the bearings, it will typically chew up the new bearings pretty quickly. With new races, the bearings are perfectly matched - old races can have a wear pattern that will not fit well with the new rollers.
The races are friction fit on (i.e.; they are pressed into) the wheel hub. You have to "drive" the races out with a special tool or press, or by tapping them out with a drift with some careful manual labor and then the reverse to install the new ones.
I agree with Mike - hub(s) for sure, the spindles if they are damaged (hopefully not!) It's not a hard job, just an annoying one.
Lots of good stuff here: http://www.etrailer.com/tv-remove_inspe ... rings.aspx
I learned about wheel bearings the hard way on my first car when a "mechanic" replaced the bearings I had gotten at the auto parts store. He didn't bother with the races and way over-torqued the spindle nut down. Much more money and some junkyard front spindles later it was fixed and I learned how they are supposed to work. I hate bearings about as much as I hate plumbing...

As BLM mentioned to me today on the phone.. i was lucky i didnt start any fires etc on along the freeway. I drove most the way again today and no char marks thank god.
I took off the hub last night and well there just isent a bearing..

This has occurred to ATVOBSESSION riders before....
Let's turn Mr. Peabody's Wayback machine to Dec 31, 2003...
Solution...bring a bigger trailer to bring the smaller trailer home.

Golly Mr. Peabody, what's wrong with those things?
Well, Sherman my boy, both of them don't have their hub caps to keep water and dirt out of the bearings!
