I'm Moving!

Postby GrizzlyGuy » Sat Jul 02, 2011 6:59 pm

My wife and I just closed escrow on a new house and got a screamin-good deal since it was a foreclosure. Yup, I'm moving w-a-y-y-y far away, all the way to the hills on the other (east) side of town. Locals call that area the "banana belt" because it gets far less snow. Not only will I be able to get the Grizzlies out much earlier in the year, but I'll be less than 10 minutes from the Boca Springs trailhead and my tires won't even have to touch I-80. If you've been to Boca, then you know that you exit at Hirschdale and hang a left. If you hang a right instead, you'd be heading toward the new house.

Here are a few pictures of things that MEN care about, vs. how spiffy or crappy the kitchen cabinets are, how big the master bedroom closets are, whether or not there is any heat or electricity, and all the other silly and unimportant stuff that women look for.

This is the beginning of our driveway, the property is 20 forested acres and you can't even see the house from the road. The roads are all private, so I'll actually be able to ride my Grizzly on the roads if I want to. Oh, and do all that with a loaded gun in the holster if I'm in the mood:
Image

As you drive in, you'll pass our pond that is stocked with some kind of fish (I think they are brown trout):
Image

The pond has an island, so I guess I'll have to get a row boat:
Image

Across the driveway from the pond is the shop and gas station (the prior owner apparently operated heavy equipment):
Image
Image
Image

There is a big 3-car garage, and it is designed to store an RV or bus (see tall door on right) so it has plenty of room for both Grizzlies, my trailer, and our two cars. Up above the garage is a 3-room apartment but we're just going to use it for guests and not rent it out:
Image

The view from the deck and windows doesn't suck, that's the front side of Northstar across the valley, plus the Lookout Mountain part of Northstar just to the right of it. The hot tub is set into the deck but I have no idea if it works or not (we're assuming it doesn't):
Image
Image
Image

If you turn your head just a bit more to the right (looking across the valley toward Donner Summit), that view doesn't really suck either:
Image

There is a dog kennel area with a doggie-door into the house, and you can see the pump house in the distance:
Image

Inside the pump house is a real big mechanical do-hickey (11 kVa emergency diesel generator) plus a fuel tank and two barrels of diesel:
Image
Image

The greenhouse-ish room made my wife very-very happy, so I'll at least note that without it... we might have ended up somewhere way less cool, but with nicer looking kitchen cabinetry...
Image

The last owner must have been a pool player (note the lights):
Image

He must have also been a heavy drinker, because who in the heck would have a bar this ugly?
Image

He was clearly flat-out drunk (stoned?) when he painted the walls in the laundry room:
Image

If the world ends as we know it, I'll fire up the generator and this little deck up on the 2nd floor will be my defensive sniping position. If I dial in enough elevation on the Nightforce, I think the ole .308 might have enough oomph to make it w-a-y out to the zombies starting down our driveway.
Image

I actually had to blow off a day of riding with Angelo so that I could sit around waiting for mobile notary people to bring me piles of papers to sign so that the escrow company could do whatever it is they do. Sorry Angelo, but now you can hopefully see why I didn't want to take any chances on this house deal! :D

very nice pick up there Eric. You had me with the shop / gas depot.... then it just got nicer.

So now do you have to pick up a toy hauler or RV :D since you have a place for it.

Thanks Brian! Yeah, when I spotted those fuel tanks on the way in for the first time, then saw the 3-car garage, the rest of it could have been a rundown shack and I'd still say WE'LL TAKE IT! :)

Eric, I forgot to ask. Internet? What are your options? That's like my only hindrance up there.

Yeah Dave, this could actually be one for my epicilicious column! Get this: yesterday Tamar said that we ought to have our landscape guy come over with his equipment and make us some walking/riding trails on the property. Oh, and the realtor said that if you want to meet your neighbors, just ride around the neighborhood on a horse or ATV. :D

No worries Angelo, you can get a free tank of gas when you stop by. That is, if I can figure out how to get gas into that tank. I assume you call one of the fuel guys that delivers to farms and he comes up in his gas truck and fills it up.

Yo Ken, tools? What's the point? I can barely tell the open end from the closed end one one of those end wrench dohickeys. I can't even figure out how you're supposed to START the diesel generator! :P

There is a wireless Internet service up here that beams off of Mt. Pluto (Northstar). The prior owner had that service and the antenna is already in place. It should actually be faster than my T1, and they say that snow won't effect it since I have a direct line-of-sight shot across the valley. :D

Image

Oh yeah, guess what else I get to do: put up real ham radio antennas! No more stupid HOA rules like I have here, and I can even put up a tower or two if I want to. With all the tall trees that are on the property, I've got a lot of options for wire antennas as well (probably what I'll go with).

Thanks Mike! If you guys are nice to me, I might turn it into the unofficial ATVObsession Campground and Resort. :D

The apartment has a full kitchen and bath, and the property is mostly level and almost all shaded by the pines so there is plenty of room to setup tents. The pond is deep enough to swim in and there is a ladder going down into the water from the "dock", we just need to figure out how to get the recirculating waterfall running and some kind of filtration in place to clean up the water (and keep all the fishies from dying). If anyone knows anything about fish pond maintenance, I'm all ears. I found an aeration pump hidden under one of those fake boulders you'd use for outdoor speakers, but when I turned on the power it just hummed and started to overheat. Here is the waterfall, buried under pine needles (on the island end of the pond):

Image

Oh yeah, we have a rock crawling obstacle to practice on after a nice cooling dip with the fishies: :)

Image

Target range you say? Why actually... YES we were thinking of doing that too, it's totally legal, I just don't want to disturb the neighbors' tranquility so I'll have to run that idea up the flagpole with them. Even if we don't set one up, the Boca range is even closer than the Boca trailhead. The only downside is that it tends to be full of cops and SWAT team members. 8-[

Thanks guys! Yesterday I whipped out my inflatable kayak and cruised around the pond to measure it's depth at various places. It is mostly 8-9 feet with a nice 1:1 slope along all of the banks. It's plenty deep to dive in off the dock as long as you don't dive deep. In a normal dive you'd be contacting the water right around the 6-7' deep point and traveling outward down the 1:1 slope toward the deepest part. The biggest area right out in front of the dock stays 8-9 feet deep until you get near the shores or all the way out to the island. (it's only about 6' deep in the "narrows" around the island). I could feel the liner with my measuring pole and (surprisingly) there isn't a lot of gunk on the bottom.

There are lots of minnows (they followed me around) and some trout that look like Rainbows but could be Browns. The water is currently so murky that I haven't been able to get a reliable sighting, and up here in lakes and ponds, the Rainbows' distinctive pink streak can fade.

The aeration system is shot so I hauled it out of the pond and ordered a new one. I did some reading on the interwebz and it turns out that fish pond maintenance is practically a science on its own, so I have my work cut out for me. I also ordered some water test kits and a nifty/cheap electronic thermometer with a wired sensor that you can dangle from your boat and measure the water temperature at various depths. I'd like to get the water quality back in shape so the trout will be happier and grow, and we can safely swim in it as well. Dissolved oxygen levels and water temperature (cold is good) are apparently the two biggies for trout.

I just now tracked down the local guy who did maintenance on the pond's filtration system and waterfall, so if it doesn't end up costing an arm and a leg, hopefully we can get those back in commission as well. :)
