My New Politically Incorrect Toy

Postby GrizzlyGuy » Wed Sep 16, 2009 11:36 am

A long-range precision rifle. Back in the non-PC days, they referred to these as "Sniper Rifles". I don't know why, as I've never heard of anyone going out on a snipe hunt and actually bagging any.

It's a Remington 700 5R Mil Spec rifle chambered in .308 Winchester (same barrel as on the M24), with a Nightforce NXS 3.5-15x56 scope (illuminated reticle) sitting on a 20 MOA picatinny base for max elevation adjustment capability. Also a Harris bipod and a quick-cuff sling from Tactical Intervention Specialists for optimal in-the-field deployment.

Here it is setup for 100 yard zeroing out in the Sagehen Hills:

It won't reach-out-and-touch-something as well as Vulcan's 50 cal, but if I get the wind call right, 1000 yards should be doable.

If you think our moon dust is bad while ATV riding, try firing one of these prone. POOF! Even without true moon dust, it still takes 20 seconds or so until you can see the target again. :|

More like a new angle on an old hobby. This rifle is purely for shooting at targets, not animals. I gave that up years ago:

LOL! No worries, I wouldn't be shooting if there was any chance of anyone riding around downrange. I was setup on an old logging road that the FS closed down years back because of eco-damage. They bouldered it off, reseeded the stream crossing, etc.

Finally, the greenies are good for something. :P

Thanks Vulcan! Yeah, the scope cost twice as much as the rifle. But for a stock factory rifle, it's shooting pretty well.

I went out on Saturday to collect dope. I started with 3 shots at 100 yards just to get the bore warmed up and check my zero. I put all 3 within 1/2 inch center-to-center (a smidge under .5 MOA):

Image

Not sure why my zero was off to the left, but I re-zeroed the windage, set elevation to an estimated value from a ballistics program, ignored the light wind from the right and fired 4 shots at my 400 yard target. Here's what I got:

Image

That's 1 7/8" center-to-center, or .45 MOA. Stock rifle with factory ammo. WoooHooo! :)

That correction for running away probably won't last - anyone who records the density altitude is going to be dead-on pretty shortly!!

I guess his ATV obsession will be changing to Shootin' Obsession....

He, he, he. Yeah, to really nail something w-a-y out there, you need good dope. So I record everything into my logbook as measured on my Kestrel portable weather station.

Here's something I hadn't noticed: On the 400 yard shots, I decided to ignore windage since I was mainly trying to record my needed elevation come-ups for this rifle and this load. So I set windage to 0.

But according to the ballistics program, had I dialed in .48 MOA of windage for the average 1.5 mph right wind, I would have been on target. Guess how far my shots got blown off to the left? About .48 MOA. :D

I don't know, Ken. I think your best bet would be GAS ON to get the fawk out of Dodge in a hurry!

P.S. - I was shooting out at Bear Valley, just down the road from Bear Valley OHV. If you look closely in this picture, you can see my target, down underneath the pointy peak on the valley floor:

If you look closely in this picture (taken from the target) you can see my Grizzly parked alongside the road, in line with the tall tree:

My Lord GG

I guess if you can shot that well at 400 yd's what is the point in having a 338 lupa or a 50 BMG
I sure wish I could shot fly's off a deer's butt at 400 yards LMAO

That is one AWESOME set up what is the grain of bullet 168 ??
Boat tail for sure :) We just got set up for reloading 308 and 30-06.

Thanks Vulcan, but I think there was a whole bunch of luck involved. I'm shooting Federal 308 Win 175 gr BTHP Gold Medal Match ammo right now. The wife has been seeing the ammo bills, so she may be willing to let me load my own soon. :)

Looks like my old wireless helmet cam experiment might come in handy. I'm thinking about trying to shoot 700-1000 yards later this week and there is no way I'll be able to see my hits or misses. So I'm thinking of setting it out by the target and beaming live video back to my shooting position. :D

Now watch, I'll probably miss bad and put a .308 hole through the video rig!

Well that would be great reloading is a lot of fun and you can bet the groups will be better. I am using H1000 powder right now for the 270 and 300 win mag and bench rest primers CCI and I have used matched brass and regular brass not much change in the brass either way your better off reloading. I bought a set of the new Lee die's and they said it would reload ammo better then factory with a money back deal and they were not kidding the dies are super resize the neck inside and out and full case sizing as well. I also put a factory crimp on the bullet to make sure the pressure comes up to max. I am holding a .70 MOA at 100 yards with reloads. I also bought a chrono so i can test the speed of the bullet seem to help me adjust the loads of powder if I am running to fast I reduce the load anyway if you start reloading and need some help let me know I will try and give you some input on what I am doing. The primer pocket is also a big deal I clean them out real good and open the hold up a little where the factory punched a hold that look out of round and small.

Keep us posted on the 1000 yard shots I want to here all the good news :)
