RIP - Bill Walsh

Postby Ken » Mon Jul 30, 2007 1:49 pm

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Former San Francisco 49ers head coach Bill Walsh, who led the National Football League franchise to three Super Bowl victories in the 1980s, died on Monday, according to a statement posted on the team's Web site.

Walsh, a Hall-of-Fame coach and creator of the pass-oriented "West Coast" offense, was 75 years old and had suffered from leukemia.

In 10 seasons as the 49ers' head coach, Walsh led the team to six NFC Western Division championships and to NFC titles in 1981, 1984 and 1988, followed by victories in Super Bowls XVI, XIX and XXIII, securing the 49ers reputation as a storied NFL franchise and the league's powerhouse of the 1980s.

Wow, the one day I do not watch Sportscenter. That is sad news. My earliest memory of watching the NFL was seeing Walsh's 49'ers tear apart my BenGALS in the 88 Super Bowl. Or maybe it was 89. Anyways,... RIP BW
