Maxxis Bighorns, any input?

Postby oldtrucks » Wed Dec 14, 2005 7:36 am

I was talking to Bryan at BC-Offroad about tires the other day. He was pretty impressed with the Maxxis Bighorn and I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on this tire. From the pictures I've seen it doesn't look like a real aggresive tire, but he said it really works well on rocks. He even felt it was a better overall tire than the ITP Mudlite XTR which seems to be the "Flavor of the Month" right now.

Mudlite XTR which seems to be the "Flavor of the Month" right now.

I just put the Mudlite xtr's on my machine in the 26'' the handeling is much improved and the lugs are giant.....the negative to this tire is it's weight I bet my quad has gained 50 lbs over stock..Rolling mass and all that. we are going into winter with snow and mud a more agresive tire may be better.

I don't know squat about the Maxxis

I have noticed the tires that have a center tread that wraps around the perimiter seem to steer easyer.

Dave the weight on the XTR is one of the things he mentioned. Did you get the 12" or 14" wheels? The 14" is going to be a great handling tire with no sidewall roll, but you lose that extra tire on the rocks.

I'd like to see a picture of the Bighorn mounted....on a wheel Terry, to see how the profile changes. The design makes it look it wouldn't grab, no real square edges or points to hook up. The one detail that I like is that it has a little more meat on the outer edge that would help protect the wheel.

Larry that is the tire perfered by the majority of GNCC racers for it's toughness, handling and traction. I have a riding buddy that has them on his Grizz and ther ride very smooth and have not failed him yet. They do good in rocks, way better than the stockers. Compaired to the XTR, they will ride and handle better, but won't get as good of traction in the deep mud. Hope this helps

Thanks Andrew, that's pretty much what Bryan said also. We don't typically go out looking for a mud bog, but do run through some mud from time to time. I found some more information at ATVfrontier that sounds promising.

Larry here are some pics of WrongWay's KQ from ATV Nation with Bighorns.

http://community.webshots.com/album/233815933yRpHcA

He seems very happy with them.

Here is another review of them

http://www.kawieriders.com/forums/index ... hl=Bighorn

From what I have gathered, and seeing the 25" that my buddy has, these tires run big. His 25" measured a hair over 26" installed. Something to think about.

They get great reviews on The Kawi Board. The thing that most don't like about them is their weight. The bighorns are supposed to be heavy. That's what seems to make the mud lites so popular.

12''...wheels.......I think because it's a radial there is less sidewall flex and they look to be more square not as round as the maxxis..

the xtr radil is much heaver than the bias ply mudlite.

Dennis and Andrew Thanks, great links.

Yep, I heard the 25" goes 26.4", 26 " is supposed to 27.5", 27" is almost 29". Bryan said that they wear great as well. Those pictures of Wrongway show the tire much better. The picture I posted makes it look like a balloon, I've got ballons now.

Which is exactly why, Radial tires are lousy Rock Crawling tires.

They also "bulge" as well when pressure is lowered. So a Bias-ply will have higher tire height with low pressure, than the comparable radial at the same pressure.

How many times have you seen a radial that looks low from the bulge, even though you check it, and the pressure is fine.

Look at a bias-ply trailer tire, and even with all the weight on it with pressure...the tire sidewall has no bulge.

If you want a Bias-ply version of the Bighorn look at the GBC Dirt Tamer

The Bighorn used to be made in a bias-ply, but with the release of the radial version I think they were phased out. The GBC's are much cheaper as well.

While doing some reading I found out that they sell a Bias Bighorn, but it has to be brought in from Canada. Right now Maxxis is only sellin a Radial Bighorn in the States. I sent an email to dealer in Canada to see if I can get them. Same forum; http://atvfrontier.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=16422.html

Does the sidewall flex on boulders???

I'd have to check them out. Sorry for the skeptisism, I've never seen a radial tire on jeeps or quads work well on rocks.

On Jeep tires....the sidewalls bulge (losing tire height)....but don't contour the rocks.
