Front Tires Flat... AGAIN

Postby Wildhorse800 » Tue Mar 09, 2010 1:46 am

Getting fed up with these front tires. Bighorns on the ITP ss106 rims. I am now on my fifth time where I am out riding only to end up with a flat front tire. They are taking turns doing, too! Left, right, left, right, now the left AGAIN!

I ride, everything is fine, then the steering gets hard...oh, must have a flat. No biggie.

Check tire. Nothing. Put air in it to find the only leaking is around the bead. Beat the shit out of the sidewall while the compressor is running to help get the beasd to try and seal up. Over inflate and hurry to get it moving again. Get it home and park it. Then they hold air just fine. Last time this happened, it went three weeks sitting with no air loss.

Well, it has happened again and this time ITP said it couldn't be their rims so I had the tires pulled off. Nothing wrong visually with either. Had them reseated with the addition of heavy duty bead sealer.

It just seems that i am the only one having this problem. Another guy I ride with has the same tires AND the same rims and has had no problem.

So I forked out the money for the tires and rims and here the quad now sits with the stock rims and tires...

Since neither company wants to do a damn thing about it, I will NOT buy Maxxis tires or ITP rims again(Carlisle Tire Company, by the way)

Bummer.

Bighorns are the best tire out there, IMO. I'm not familiar with the SS106 rims. I have the SS108 rims on 2 different quads...no issues.

I know, Ken. It just seems that I am the only one! I know you guys run yours at a lower pressure with no problems.

I am giving up on ITP Customer service. The guy I got just flat out refuses to believe that it MAY be their rims. Not saying it is, just that it could be.

Tell him you'll prove it, one way or another.

Put the rear tires on the front rim and visa vis....

If it's the tires....the front tires will go flat again.

If it's the rims....the rear tires will go flat.

I think it's going to be one of those times where we never will get to the bottom of it.
Been talking back and forth with the rep. from Maxxis and he is asking all kinds of questions to make sure he has all the info he needs to dig deeper into it. At least he seems genuinely concerned.
For now I am just gonna run the stock set up for a while.

On the plus side, the tire mechanic is still in disbelief that those tires are approaching 1500 miles and the tread is still that good! They definitely last...

Are you using Slime in your tires? I haven't had these issues and it looks like we have the same tires & rims.

No, I don't use slime. There are others in our group that have the same set up also, just different machines. I just don't think any tire should HAVE to have slime to keep it on the rim!

But thanks anyways :)

OK.

Well, the wheels/tires are back on again.

I guess just keep my fingers crossed. I did switch the left and right sides since having the beads sealed up.

Who knows? Time will tell... :?

Lots of people run slime....

You've got a tire with ultra low pressures.....so it's not a shock..or shouldn't be. I have HAD a tire that always goes flat between rides.

Between rides wouldn't bother me as much.

First, I've used that tire/wheel package and never experienced what you are. When I install tires I scuff the wheel, then spray the tire with 409 and seat the bead. I set the pressure at 20 psi and leave it there for 2-3 days before lowering it to 6-8 psi. Never lost a bead or heard of one using this technique.

Something else to try we used to do on early rock rigs, prep as described above and slide the tire over the wheel with the 409. Let that dry then coat the wheel and tire bead with some Gasgacinch, http://www.gasgacinch.com/

Let the Gasgacinch tack up then inflate. Your flats and beads popping off are over

If anything, I like the girl falling down pic! Appreciate it. If they do it again, I'll do that trick next.

The bead sealer he used reacts like rubber cement so as to actually "melt" the rubber before drying. He is my vulcanizing guy also, so I know he does really good work. He did my rear tire sidewall and it has been fine. That gash was @ 1/4 from the bead and nearly 3" long!!!

Now, as far as pressure. He inflated them this last time with @ 14 lbs and they have been up in the garage since. Maybe that as well the sealer will do the trick.

Went out last weekend and this time the one rear tire picked up a rock and pinched it betwen the rim and the ground. Waiting for ITP to figure out what they are gonna do about my bent/cracked rim. SS106s are discontinued, so I am gonna have one wheel not match! Just keeps getting better...

I may have missed it, how how wide are your rims and tires?

One reason, and the main reason I went with 14" rims was because of the choice in rim width and tire width.

I run a narrower rim in the front for the narrower tire. I've seen alot of the same size rims front and rear with a wide tire in the rear and narrow in the front. Thats a bad combo for a bead blowing or leaking. And doesn't protect the bead portion of the rim very good.

I have the SS 108s in black and they are pretty strong, put a flat spot in one, but ITP sent me a new, just sent them a pic.

They are the typical same size rims, diff. tire sizes. No one else is having this problem, though.
