What is your preference in sizing of Bighorns?

Postby Rider11x » Wed Dec 31, 2008 12:52 pm

I've been running my Bighorns for over 3 years now, with very little noticable wear, in the 25" variation........But was curious if others prefer 26's or maybe 27's.....Chime in! 8)

I have 26s on my 2007 Grizz 660. I like the bigger footprint, but they rub against the front wheel well side (the black part just behind where your feet are) when the suspension squats down. It's not really a big deal, but a little annoying to hear from time to time. I think the Bighorns will eventually win against the fender plastic... :-)

Image

I trimmed the plastic a little bit to minimize the rubbing. It only happens when the suspension squats down - like bottoming out.

Image

Here's a comparison to 25s - the red Grizz 450 has the 25s that used to be on the 660. The 26" front tire is about as big as the 25" rear...

Image

The rear is a little wider, of course...

Now that Maxxis has released the "Bighorn 2.0" they have the 26" tires with an 11" rear instead of the 12". I wish they offered that in the original Bighorn, 12" is a little too wide for the rear. I think the lighter and narrower 26" is the best set up for most of the larger cc machines

It will certainly pain Oldtrucks to hear this but, I agree with him. As long as the 2.0 version has the same durability as the 1.0 they will be a great tire. I went with 25" as the 2.0 had just come out were untested and backordered.

I've heard the Bighorn 2.0 are crap and should be avoided.

This surprises me, considering the excellent service and performance of the original Bighorns. I haven't tried a set nor have I read any reviews, where did you hear this?

Well, in this technological world, we merely need to wait for Bighorn 2.1!

I've read on other ATV specific sites where they were purchased (from RMATV), examined and thought to be much inferior to the original Bighorn; then promptly returned.

- the tread difference (for 25X8X12) is 5/32 less for the 2.0 Bighorn, but the big difference is about 5 lbs. less weight for the 2.0 (18 vs. 23 lbs.).

- the 2.0's are 5/32 less in tread depth

- Small, shallow lugs

The small shallow lugs are the result of taking 5/32" of the tires. Personally that isn't anything, I had over 3k miles on one set and that's about how much wear I had. I'd rather loose the 5 lbs and give up the tread depth. Taking 5lbs of each corner will make your quad ride and handle better. Dropping un-sprung weight allows the suspension to work without having to fight that weight

I'd guess the people unhappy with the tread depth are looking for a mud tire, Bighorns were never a good tire in the mud. I'm going to take the 1.0 26's I have on my CanAm off and put the on our Ranger, and get a set of 26" 2.0's for the CanAm, I hope the lighter tire will pep it up a little

If I was worried about getting a lighter Bighorn (which I am not), I'd just spin them off on a nice paved road, stopping occaisionally to measure tread depth and allow the smoke cloud to clear while filming a great video. LOL! I like a deep tread depth for the fact that it is more tire life. Mine see 50% of their life on pavement, riding, plowing snow, and other work, so I truely value the qualities of the original Bighorn. 8)

Like I said and you as well, 3k miles on mine and they performed like the day I put them on. I don't see how shedding 5lbs and a little lug can be a bad thing with this tire

I determined over last weekend that the Bighorns aren't that great in sand either. They can sure shoot a rooster tail, but only dig into the sand and not plow through it.

Did you air them down? They are 300% better aired down IMO.

That's true, once they break loose they dig into loose soil/sand/snow like piranhas into flesh. Throttle control Brute, it gets you into trouble just like it gets you out.....

i would say depands on the sand i ride in the sand all the time
at the creek by house there is beach sand and pea gavale style sand and i don't care what you run pea gravle hates YOU!!

I had paddles on my sport bike and I still got stuck in pea gravle

try diffrant air pressures till you find the one that fits they way you ride.
not every one rides te same
