800 Shut off out of the blue!

Postby Wildhorse800 » Thu Mar 24, 2011 3:49 am

Went out for a camping/riding wekend. I got about 14 miles on when we came up on 2 slow movers, so I pulled over to let them get some distance when my quad shut off. Now it just cranks and doesn't even try to fire. Tried it a few more times over the next 2 days with no luck. Everything lights up, fuel pump runs...I'm stumped. It is at the dealer now...luckily the extended warranty is still good. So I called to see what the verdict was, and they said they were gonna "try" the coil pack after it gets here from being ordered. Try??? Aren't you supposed to diagnose before fixing? Anywho... just wondering if anyone has had anything like this happen. No warnings at all, just died.

My guess is no, but I didn't touch it. It's still warranty so I figured let them worry about it. It worries me when any shop starts throwing parts at a vehicle. Says alot of their mechanic. I don't know if they even checked for power to the coil first. That word "try" makes me nervous! 8-[

I wish it were that simple...
I always check the easy stuff first and that was on the trail. So if it ends up at the dealer, then the simple stuff was a bust. I love my Polaris', but what sucks is that the local mechanic just isn't very good.

And I am not the only one...

Been there...done that. I never turn it off....so it's not exactly the first thing I think about.

Well, the quad is back and running. Would have had it back sooner if they had listened to me to start with.
They tried coil and ECM, fuse block, wiring....
I suggested crank sensor from day one....apparently I should go be a Polaris tech!

Yes. It was the crank sensor. [-o<

BTW,

They installed plugs and a new air filter and never even asked if I wanted it done then tried to charge me for it!!! I paid for the parts but not the labor to be decent about it.
