Air Presure ?.

Postby Ghost Rider » Sat Dec 04, 2010 3:23 pm

I just got some Bighorn 2.0`s, right now i have the air presure at 7 psi front and rear. The trails i ride on are mostly dirt with some rocky sections, is 7 psi alright or should i run a different presure ?.

7 is high. 5 is better.

Rock crawling less...3.5 to 4.

I don`t do any rock crawling, but at 5 psi that just seems to low to me, as big and heavy as these tires are. At that presure is there a chance of blowing the bead on a tire ?.

I run 1 psi on mine in the sand. Never blown a bead and in the sand it would be easy if they were going to blow.

5 psi has worked fine for me on original Bighorns, mostly trail riding.

i run 4.5 up front and 5 in the back, for my go to setting (trail riding) and im almost 1,000 pounds rolling (and yes i run big horns o.g.). Even if i run .5-1 psi more in the front or back i notice it out on the trail in the corners, and the front tires will bounce / re-bound to much if i run over 5.5 on the fronts. I do how ever run at 7 psi when im in Baja and going to run on the hwy / paved roads for awhile, but i lower them when i go off pavement and then just run 4.5 / 5 back on the pavement but i cant run nearly as fast on the corners.

As jack said gauges very wildly, ive been using the round "slime" brand low pressure and its almost spot on. Just dont use a gauge that goes up to 50-100psi to do your atv low pressure tires or it will be off a lot. You want a gauge that has what ever your trying to run (psi) as close to the middle, e.x use a 10-15 psi gauge for best results for 5-7 psi.

http://www.amazon.com/Slime-20096-Press ... 919&sr=8-1
This is what i use it goes to 20 psi, but i still get good readings on it. I tested the first one i bought at my home medical supply place, they have very precise air gauges and they matched up just about perfect. Ive since had to buy 2-3 more (gave 1 away lost 1-2) but havent checked any of the others but if i remember i will next time i head over there.

Ok ken, i went out and lowered the presure to 5 psi. I can`t go riding right now to try it out because the roads are covered in ice, and its just to dangerous.

You'll notice the tires soak up more smaller rocks...smooth out the ride, better traction, more flotation in snow.

Less flats too. I use to alway run really high pressure on a old quad (20 years ago) because I rode on the pavement alot, but always got flats.
With the lower pressure I hardly get flats, (until i got the big horns, mine seem to get a puncture just by looking at them)
