Good wheel/tire combo without modding height of quad

Postby Wildhorse800 » Mon May 04, 2009 4:16 pm

(Hi Ken, I came on over!)

Looking for some different input on what you all are running on SP 700/800s.

Sizes of rims, tires and some pics please. This is me doing my homework so please help me make my decision a happy and satisfying one!

Oh and the back spring are super scary when you have to put them on because you have to compress the sping/shock to remove a spring plate so the spring will come off.

I have spring compessors that are used for cars changing struts will that work.

you just use an impact gun to compress the spring i think there is enough room in the gaps but wasn't sure.

I may have already asked, but do you have to lift the SP800 to fit the 26" horns?

I was looking for exact tire sizes that work without modifications.

Hey Mike....

If you got a poo...this is your place... ;)

Bighorns in the front....26x9x12 is your most popular size. They also come in 26x9x14.

They have 27"...but Bighorns run big anyway...so I would be a little hesitant (and I was recently) to go that big. I decided to stick to what worked, and 26".

The rear you'll find 26x12x12 and 26x11x14.

With the warranty, you can't go wrong with the ITP SS108 rims. They'll give you the offset you need and look good too. Now, nobody I know has tried to actually use the lifetime warranty...so that's either good or bad. :)

If you really want to just trail ride and your PRIMARY goal is turns and handing....then 14" rim will get you that. But you lose 1" of tire around the rim. So that means less cushion (but you get more handling) and tire flex for rocks. I'd say the 14" ride will be a wee bit stiffer at the same air pressure.

Otherwise go with 12" rim. They definitely handle very well on trail. Just run with a little more air...5-5.5 lbs for more control. Run 4lbs for a little cushion in your ride.

so I can run either the 11" or the 12" width in the rear without rubbing issues with the ITP rims?

Uhm, think again Skippy!! I tried mine and it was a MAJOR PITA!! I wound up using the lathe to compress the spring and pull the keeper. The good thing is you remove the whole thing as a unit and work with it off the bike. The new style with the 'beehive' springs are even scarier than the old style ('04 and before). I did mine and then Ken's and my arse was puckered with both.

Yes, the ITP's have enough offset to run the 26" with no rubbing. If your springs have a few miles on them you will probably want HD ones in there. It's a relatively cheap upgrade (~$40 each) and does wonders for the sag.

The Big Horns ONLY come in a 12" width on the 26's. Like Ken said, go to RMATV and pick your machine, everything else falls into place.
