some Newbie questions!!

Postby locojo25 » Sun Jan 20, 2008 2:57 pm

Hey guys as I said i recently purchased an 03 sportsman 700 mossy oak... This quad is awesome compared to what i was used to as a kid i grew up on suzuki 230 quadracers and a polaris trailboss. So this is my first utility 4x4 and deff. in the 700 class. I love the thing as it is but i need a lil more.. I have read about everyone upgrading to the 800 clutch but am not certain if thats an option with my 03. I wanted to add aluminum skid plates for my chassis and a-arms but i have a steel one that incorportes my plow mount so i will probably settle with just aluminum a-arm protection. I m looking for aluminum wheels and possibly 26in tires. i have added a full bash guard to the front. It has the polaris warn winch rated at 2500lbs...is that going to be sufficient? all in all im looking for some performance upgrades so i can get those front wheels in the air and some things to aid in some offraod riding..any suggestions are appreciated!!
thanks in advance guys Joe

Congrats...and welcome.

Aluminum wheels will make a power difference. (less to turn).

If you have any altitude change (more than 3000'), then a Jet Kit will help out the power.

Front wheels in the air....that's a feat for a 700 carb.

Well, don't let the bias of an 800 owner desuade you!

I have an '04 carb'd 700 and I can get my wheels in the air. It's a bit scary though considering how heavy that big bastid is.

As Ken said, a dynojet kit makes a world of difference, especially when heading up in elevation. I actually think it's an absolute necessity! I went from a stock 155 jet down to a dynojet 138 jet. My plugs went from being black as night to a nice 'normal' brownish grey color. And my power increase was VERY noticeable.

I also switched to aluminum ITP SS108 rims with 26" Bighorns. The traction difference alone was enough to launch the front end another foot or so off the ground. This was not my purpose, but it was a result of the change. I highly recommend the Bighorns for almost any type of riding. As I'm sure you will hear from just about everyone else that has them on their machines. Being radials, they ride much better than bias, and for those of us getting long in the tooth, it's much easier on the old tired bones. I did have to crank my rear spring preload all the way up and I put the TM2 adjusters on the front for a little more space. I was rubbing on almost every bump and jump before. Now I rub only occasionally and only on the most severe bumps.

I haven't done any clutch work yet, but I am looking at the 800 swap or the HeelClicker setup. Still on the fence though.

One last thing - you can swap the 800 dual exhaust setup to your 700, it's a direct bolt on. Might give you a couple HP more.

Enjoy the machine, I think you'll really like the ride once you start hitting the trails!

Ive got the 800 primary on my 05-700. It has more bottom end "pull" now as the belt sits lower in the sheaves... also helps with engine braking. Which seems to work alot better. Top end is not effected and seems the same.

You may want to change the air intake to the 800 intake pipe. its a direct change and allows the bike to breath abit better or you can do what I did and cut the 700 intake then add 2" dia. "pool hose" ..With the hose you can cut it at the max height. heat the hose up push it on then use some "marine goop" and 4 small screws to hold it in place.

LOL...Hang on a minute...You Started it with that one simple word, it went downhill from there. I dont know if GG has spent just to much time in the bush alone with a camera or maybe it was that look on your face as you "lubed" your shaft in the vid (thats enough to scare most LOL) Poor freaking Kendo...Yeah I'd be agreeing with ya after that to just so not to piss you off hehehe.

Ok, umm, uhh...Welcome to the Obsession Forum Loco, a truly great place for info and some good laughs. Just re-read your posts before you hit "submit" as the term "submit" opens the door to many ave's usually traveling downhill LOL.

Heres a couple stock part numbers
5435932 Duct, Air Inlet ...This is the stock 800 air inlet tube(larger opening)
3211106 Belt ... Stock 800 belt, kevlar reinforced. Some will say "buy a Dayco belt" Dont bother, The stock belt is every bit as good if not better than anything out there..I speak from experiance here. I know it works with the 04 700 but not 100% sure on the 03.
1322555 Drive Clutch assem. This is the entire "Drive or Driven" Clutch less weights and spring. Very easy to change with the right tools. Overall for general trail riding I recomend it. I have riden with guys that have done other clutch mods and didnt see any clear advantage?? Keep in mind changing one area of your primary or secondary will effect another area. Its one of the reasons I went to the 800 primary. It helps low end power without effecting anything else. Add the 800 belt and you have a bulletproof set-up.
Just remember..USE LOW and HIGH range properly it'll increase belt life. I keep the original on board as a spare, just in case, but after 2000miles the 800 belt is still in good shape.

Air filters are another area to look at. I'm sure someone can chime in here, cough cough...Ken?

Wheels and tires? I just changed mine, couldnt believe the difference it made from the steel wheels and stock tires.

Hey BC, did you have to change your jetting with that larger inlet pipe?

I'm very interested in the 800 primary switch, I don't suppose you have any part numbers for that - do you?? :)

I have a 700 EFI Kendo, but I did a plug change awhile after I changed the inlet...colour on the plugs looked fine.

Part numbers are in my previous post. You'll need to use your weights and spring from the original primary as the new one doesn't come with them. Price may be a factor though...they dont give em away, thats for sure. Unless you can find one elsewhere. Throttle response throughout the entire range is improved and there is alot more "useable" power in low gear...the bike will move when you want it to, you'll find that you need to change the way you feather(or hammer) the throttle in most situations. Make sure to get the belt as well. I'm told they run cooler and are alot stronger. I just had a look at mine and after 2000miles it still looks good.
