King Of The Hammers - 2013

Postby Ken » Mon Nov 19, 2012 11:55 pm

It's official.....I'm racing in it.

Scott M will be my co-pilot.....I paid the entry fee last week...and sent my forms and waivers into today.

1) Replaced all the ball joints (one was toast)
2) Replaced all the shock mount bolts
3) New UMHW guard for the trailing arm
4) A-Arm reinforcement bracket
5) Safety nets
6) New Lowrance 5M- Elite Baja GPS

Still to go
Amber and Blue desert racing light
Racing suit
Ear pieces for ham radio for communications (we'll talk on 70cm simplex inside and 2M to the crew at pit)
Possibly put King Shocks on
Frame reinforce install (I already have it)
I'm sure I'm forgetting something.

Angelo is the pre-run vehicle......anyone that wants to come.....First week in February. Johnson Valley.

So stoked!!
to add to the list.
you need mechanically inclined people with at least a stock 4x4 truck for the remote pits ( i don't know how many pits the utv guys use)
i would recommend at least one spare tire at each remote pit and if you can afford it two the way you like to pop tires
several gas cans at the remote pits. a fire extinguisher at each fueling station.

the main key to finishing from what i have read is.
"Every spot we flagged as dangerous while pre running had a broken or rolled rig sitting at it when we passed." a KOH finisher.

Two questions:

1) What are you leaving me in your will?
2) On the day after the race, who should I call so as to collect it?

The A-arm and shock kit are bolt on.

Maybe you can help me....Dave too.

If you look at the photo...One end is an adjustable HEIM joint. This weekend....the bolt of the heim broke..snapped. It would be a major improvement to upgrade the bolt size....just not sure how to do that. Any ideas?

So who is the metal engineers around here?? Dave? Mike?

I talked to ZBroz. They have 2 options. A new racing model with 5/8" heim joint over my current 1/2" which broke. OR....use their 1/2" joint that is Chromoly.

I'm not sure what's stronger....chromoly at 1/2" or non-chromoly at 5/8"? I know that the strength of an object increasing in size isn't linear, but it's exponential.

what caused it to break? you can cut the end off and weld a new one back on ,but i think with what your getting into your better off going with the raceing model. seems like best would be 5/8 chromoly heim! :D
not a hard job to replace them with 5/8 if they will fit inside your arms.

They increased the size of the rod by 1/8th, to fit the 5/8's.

I think it broke from rock crawling...slowly moving it back and forth...and back and forth. There was rust 1/2 way on it...so it had been partially broken for sometime.

You have options for that heim, but it would require some metal work. Cutting that one out or ordering a set of arms with NO heim so you could use your own. Johnny joint comes to mind from the Jeep world.

Personally, I would go chrome moly if the heim bolt broke. Obviously that is fatigued metal and CrMo is going to be a lot less likely to fail. Agree with Mike, 5/8 CrMo would be the best option. They're out there, you don't have to buy from the place that made the arms.
