Tie downs

How do you guys secure your quads to your trailers? I have 2 05 AC 500 on a triton atv 88 trailer and I'm not satisfied with my methods. Any pictures would be good. Thanks.

First off you need to purchase the Montana Jacks brand tie downs... As far as securing them.

Well, connect the tie down from the quad to the trailer, pull the strap tight, winch it down until it's very snug and secure the excess webbing to the trailer. The attached photo should give you all the info you need. It don't get any better than that.... lol.

Terry's right.


Don't bother with other brands....I've bought more Home Depot brands than I can count. They're junk.


The Montana Jack one rules because it has the Ratchet to tighten, but has the Quick Release cinch strap. The best part is....Take the Handle of the Ratchet and push it full forward till it's flat...that releases the gear click. Then pull on the strap and it will un-wind from the spool. I usually just hook on my rack first....push and give a pull. Now the ratchet can slide freely along the strap so you can place on any rub point. Saving your strap.

Ken,

I just remembered...... Three quads on a trailer was a very tight fit. Two quads with 26" ITP 589's and one quad with the stock GY Rawhide Grips.

Do you think your trailer will hold three quads with the 26" ITP 589's or even 27" tires? or replacing one SP700 with an SP800?

Hi sgyinc....I know you said you have a trailer...but here is another option...best part about it is you do not need straps.

My friend Neil was going through straps left and right... cha-ching!.....so he did a little research on the Louisiana Guard Dog...Cabela's sells them.... http://www.cabelas.com/products/Cpod0012491.jsp

Anyhow...he swears by this....we did some long trips with it and it held up really well. The ramp slides in between the wheels for storage. And it didn't move at all. Very secure and not very difficult to install.

That's ok if you don't have a trailer....but if you tow a trailer too...you're out of luck.

Like I said...I've NEVER broken a Montana Jack strap. And I've broken no less than 10 Home Depot straps.

$26 bucks for 2 straps.

I'm at 2 years and counting...that's a lot straps before you exceed the cost of that gizmo.

Also...with the weight on the very end of the tail gate...that's alot of stress on the gate and it drives tail heavy.

Thats the same way I am securing them just without the Montana Jacks. For some reason I just don't like cranking down the suspension that much. Any body ever use the straps that go over the tires?

That's what I thought until you look closer..... It appears you might be able to pull a trailer as well...... Check it out and let me know.

It's equipped to carry a small trailer. We did it w/ my Kodiak in tow. :)

There is no problems with the weight on the gate. FYI...the only reason his quad partially sits on the gate is because his bed is shorter and the Bomb he has (2 seater) is much longer than the average ATV.

I wouldn't think Cabelas would sell a product that would do damage.

And if you knew Neil (above in pic)....trust me he looked at all angles before making the decision. :wink:

I'm sure the MJ straps work great as well.

I use the heavy duty yellow 1.5 inch wide ratchet straps.

Personally, I think they should make all 2 seater quads illegal. They're pretty to look at however very dangerous.... :D

and..... What I don't like about the guard dog is that it connects to the quad using a ball. On the trail you need something to hook to when you or your riding partner is in need and a ball is not the most efficient way.

Plus, I'm sure it costs more than $26. I'd go with the tie-downs.

My trailer could fit 3, with 26" (12 x 12 x 26") and 27", with 1 800...WITHOUT the 1" wheel spacers.

With the spacers.....too much overhang.

I'm pretty knowledgeable about trailers and weight....There's no way I'd tow anything with weight.

It just wouldn't work for me.

Notice the above picture...how much farther in the ATV is. The weight of the back wheel, is on the gap between the bed and the gate.

With a Polaris....putting it farther out...is putting 500 or so lbs of the 850 on your gate.

And the ride sux.....just a small wheel turn, make the rear goosey loosey.


I'm with Terry....but 350 lbs of people on the top of a ATV with 2 seats...is a recipe for Flippage eventually. The driver can lean, and use weight to help compensate.....the passenger...doesn't know what the driver is going to do.

Maybe cruising around with a kid....slowly...but 2 grown ups? I'm just conservative, as is Terry because we know too much about the effects of weight transferring having loaded airplanes for 15 years of our lifes. I can load 70,000 lbs of stuff in a DC-8, and tell you exactly where the center balance point is....and when it's not? LOL...it makes a cool picture!

Everyone has their own personal preference....it's not to say who is right or wrong...or who is more knowledgeable. What works for one doesn't work for others.

As for the plane shot....I almost did that, managing the unloading of a 727.

Gotta get the Heavy can...in the first position...Right Terry?
