Well...I use Magellan. So does Terry and Dan. Mainly because I did...so we all would have similar stuff.

I know the Garmin 76c? I think...is really popular.

That said....I know Garmin doesn't have the 3D software...which Magellan does.

So...why did I originally choose Magellan? The main reason is. Magellan uses standard SD memory. Garmin uses proprietary memory..it's alot more expense and less memory.

Personally, I would hang on, because Magellan has a whole new line of GPS units coming out...called the eXplorist. It's really cool....one flavor for everyone. The main advantage, it connects to your PC with USB instead of Serial Cable. Because it's USB and SD...when you plug it in...it just becomes another drive. And because it's SD....you literally have Unlimited memory. I got SD after a rebate for 512MB for 49.99. That's a lot of stuff to store on a GPS.

Also...I can send you my waypoints...to get you going again.

Yep. That's it. They have various flavors.....but I really like the color one.

Here's all the flavors.

http://www.magellangps.com/en/products/ ... asp?bhcp=1

Terry was quick to joke about the price, but it's not that much more than than the black and white one he has. If you read that spec sheet, that one for $449 comes with the Magellan Topo 3D map software.

http://www.magellangps.com/en/products/ ... RODID=1044

Which is $149 if you buy it alone.

So that makes the unit $300. The black and white model we have, was $249.

Ken,

Where did you find this information? The Magellan web site doesn't show much, and everything I've read makes it look like the Topo software is extra. I'm ready to send the Vista packing, just waiting for the XL to become available.

I'm certain they changed the ad.

Last time I looked they say the XL is "coming soon", sure wish I knew what that meant. I checked a number of internet dealers and they don't have them. I hope it's out before Xmas, like to put that on my wish list for my wife.

It's out.

I saw it at Fry's in Sacramento 3 weeks ago. It's pretty cool...like I said...I LOVE the USB/SD option. Makes it SO easy to move your stuff around.

OK, guess I'll stop by Fry's on Friday and see what's included. I like everything you pointed out, USB and SD just seems like no brainers, and their topo is awesome. My only concern would be water and dirt in the SD slot. I know, they're outdoor toys, they should be sealed up and not have any problems.

I held one in the store....looked water resistent at worst.

I like the goodies in Frys....but getting help is an exercise in futility. I stood there with no intent to buy, holding it...check it out...trying to turn it on...nothing. I was there for a good 5 minutes....nobody cared.

I'd go there to check it out....then try to find it online....There's so many variations of this model....I would DEFINITELY pick carefully.

Look for the Topo 3D software on Ebay....I got mine there for 1/2 retail.
