Better wire splices

Postby hemingray » Sun Nov 25, 2012 3:38 pm

Some time ago I wired some auxiliary backup lights into the trailer light circuit on my pickup. I used one of those little taps that you squeeze with a pair of pliers. Some time ago they stopped working (like 5 years ago!) and I finally got around to getting down into the wiring to test them and see why. Well, here's why.

The top wire is the trailer backup wire, the bottom one was the one going to the aux lamps.

Now they're connected with a waterproof butt splice connector, from West Marine. These things are great - you crimp them and then heat them up (a propane torch on low works well) and the adhesive melts and fuses everything together for a completely waterproof splice. They're pricey at almost $5 for 3 of them, but to waterproof a connection, they're worth it.

I also used them for extending a wire antenna outside - it's critical that the connection not oxidize or corrode or it affects the transmitter, so these things are excellent for that too.

Cool - I haven't been over there yet. I keep meaning to drop in and check them out. As it was, I kept meaning to stop in at West Marine in Rocklin. When we were visiting Salt Lake last week, there was a West Marine right there in front of me in Midvale, UT so I popped in and got them! Long way to go for 3 connectors! :-)

I use the marine heat shrink tubing on just about everything. Has a "glue" on the inside, so not only does it shrink around the wire, but the adhesive gets tacky and sticks to the wire sealing out water. Works great. Harbor Freight sells it too, in those multi pack kits.
