American Trails bags - experience?

Postby hemingray » Fri Jul 23, 2010 7:40 am

Anyone have experience with the American Trails brand, such as sold by Montana Jack's? I need to get a rear bag after watching Grizzly Guy recline while I was taking pictures - I need that! I also need more space than my two toolboxes provide.

These bags are zipperless and look to be spacious and organized.

Lori has one. Works well...still going strong after 2 or 3 seasons. Nothing to complain about.

That looks like a nice bag. Here is my Mad Dog bag for comparison:

http://www.atvaccessoryoutlet.com/catal ... tegory=284

I think I'd go with the Mad Dog because it has an extra pocket front/center where the American Trails bag puts the water bottle carriers. I use that extra pocket to stow my riding jacket which is handy. When taking a break, it is also comfy to lean back against the bag, with or without my jacket in the pocket. You'd be leaning back against the water bottles with the American Trails bag, not so comfy. Like the American Trails bag, you can get the Mad Dog in black if you don't like camo.

IMHO, the killer bags to have are the fender bags. You've got all of your most used stuff in easy reach, even when you are moving along. I tried the tank bags and they suck, they get in your way.

Decisions, decisions.

I also looked at these (great price on closeout!) http://www.tbags.com/CloseOutDetail.asp ... ectedCat=8

In any event, the Mad Dog bags are sold out all over - they've either stopped making them or it's model change time. Who knows!

I agree on the fender bags. I want to get another - I had a pair of Kolpins, but one of them had a broken zipper and the current one seems to be failing as well. They are totally handy for all the small stuff.

They must have been snapped up - now it's not there, they only have the lower-end ones and the rubber bags. It looks like Mad Dog = Stearns = Coleman. Maybe they're doing a product revision. Too bad.

Thanks for the tip tho - appreciate it!!

There's certainly an AT bag on the quad on the right...

I went ahead and ordered the cargo bag from Montana Jack's.

And got it - wow, nice stuff. We'll see how it holds up, but suddenly I have plenty of room to carry stuff, dustless.

Picking up this thread to move it from another....

Here are a couple of pictures of what they look like for real.

Image

The two front compartments are detachable and are just large open spaces.

Inside the main bag there are three compartments.

Image

The top has a compartment that is accessed from the back - it's not as dustproof as the main compartments, I use it for extra water bottles and whatnot. The bungee cords across the top are handy for trussing other stuff on it.

So these are zipperless or is there a zipper? I don't see one. The large compartment stays dustless?? This is a tough decision because of all the choices out there. I'm not the type of person to buy one every year either. So I'm looking for one that will last for quite sometime.

Zipperless. The buckle holds the top down, and the mag strips hold the edges together. It has worked very well for me. The front mini-bags have a similar strip, and buckles hold them down as well. If I needed the top compartment to stay clean, I would just put things into garbage bags. I like to ride fast and the outside of the bag gets a ton of dust on it, but stays clean inside.
