ram mount

Postby regor » Sat Jul 05, 2008 5:11 pm

I ordered a ram mount for my video camera. Just the top part that will interchange with my gps holder. I have that mounted on my handlebars. I was wondering if that was the best place for a camera? As far as vibration and the ups and downs, maybe the front rack would be a better place? Anybody have a preference? I'm really looking to recording the majority of my rides.

My experience with mounting a camera on the handlebars is not good. the bars move around far more than the front rack. You may get some good footage, but most will be unusable.

i would be woried about breakage in case of a roll i know when i roll the bars lay flat against the seat so yeah that is the only thing i would be worried about

Ram Mount

You may want to look into a monopod. It is sold by a company Called All Rite Products. www.Allriteproducts.Com I use a monopod mounted to my front rack to hold my helmet cam. It works great. My cam is a Samsung SC-X210L. The monpod holds it in palce and it also has adjustmets so you can point the cam/camera in any direction. All their produts are top quality and very affordable. You won't be disapointed. If the web site dosen't come up you can call them at: 1-800-771-8471 Ask for Travis.

I am looking for advice on which RAM mount to use for mounting a camera on the front rack of an ATV. I already use them for my GPS on the handlebars, and for my nuvi in the car. So which one for a camera on my front rack.
thanks

Rather than mount the camera directly to the handle bars or front rack, I like to use a helmet cam with a setup like this:

Image

The helmet cam (inside it's rubber mount) is taped to a RAM diamond plate that has a ball. The ball goes inside the arm as usual. The picture shows the RAM clamp that I use for the front rack, but I can also use one of the balls that I have clamped to the handlebars with U-bolts (one on each side). The cameras live in in my cushy Pelican case or you can just shove it into one of your bags with a little padding around it (I use a piece of pipe wrap foam, very cushy).

Running multiple cams let's you pretend you're a Monday Night Football director and edit like this when you get home: 8)

One of my helmet cams failed one time on a 2-day ride into Gold Valley a few years ago. I then used the main/big cam instead. Rather than mount it directly to the rack using RAM mounts, I set it on top of my clothes bag that was on the front rack, bungeed it down, and it worked pretty well. You can see that setup and results in this video: Helmet Stoways. The shots of me freaking out because of the flippin' spiders in my helmet were taken from that camera. :)

Thanks a bunch GG. I know you are both the camera and Ram mount expert here and I hoped that you would weigh in. I won't be as sophisticated as you with multiple cameras, so I am still trying to decide exactly what to do. I was motivated by the Brute Force video's on the UtahATV forum. He attached the camera to his helmet. I have two more questions for you.
Do you use that clamp shown to hold it onto your helmet?? AND who is the best source for Ram stuff?? I used your recommendation before, but can't remember who it was. Express mounts?
Thanks again

I've ordered RAM mounts from a couple different places, I can't remember which place I recommended before. I'd check GPSCity.com and TheMountDepot.com if I was looking for more. I know I've ordered stuff from GPSCity and I think I've ordered from The Mount Depot.

My helmet mounts use velcro. In that first picture, look at the cam in the upper right. It is inside one of the Xtreme Aluminum Helmet Mounts (aluminum with a curved bottom surface) from HelmetCamera.com:

Image

It velcros to a strip on my helmet. I have some less-indestructible mounts as well and they all use velcro (like this Hoyt mount):

Image

I prefer the curved bottom on the HelmetCamera.com mount as it holds better to my ski boot for my dual-cam shots during ski season (one from the boot, one from the helmet):

The cams in my pictures are all SD cams. I got one of these VholdR ContourHD 1080p HD helmet cams for X-mas but still haven't tried it out. I also have a GoPro. Both of those use velcro to mount to the helmet.

Another nice thing about using the small cams is that you can get creative. Here is a rig that Flyin Boy and I tossed together using one of our spare hang glider base tubes as an on-quad boom (the RAM clamp/cam shown above is on the end):

We got some cool shots from it while on smooth roads, but if you hit a bump it would start bouncing.
