What GPS would you buy?

lol, it's an electronic device. Whatever you buy today you'll regret tomorrow, just the way things go. Currently I have a Magellan Explorist XL, a Lowrance Baja 540C, and just bought a Garmin Rino 530CHx. They all work great and each have a different application.

The Rino is a true hand held that offers active polling of others in your party, so long as they also have a Rino. A very nice feature when you're running around on a snowmobile off road. Simply hit the poll button and you can see where someone is along with there tracks. The screen isn't as large as I'd like, but I need to remember it's a hand held. Downfall beyond that is the price.

The Magellan XL is an awesome GPS but too large to be a hand held or carry in a pocket. Mounted on the handlebars it has a huge color screen that is easy to see and use from the seat. It seems a little more user friendly to me, but there are some issues with the software that take time to learn. The older versions of the maps will work with it and they are much better maps. However, it saves tracks and routes in a different format, so you have to convert them to see them on a computer if you want to do that.

The Lowrance Baja 540C is a dash mounted offroad unit that has some pretty incredible mapping software. I wish it was easy to move from vehicle to vehicle, it's like having a TV on board.

I just got a new "REI Gearmail" E-mail talking about the Colorado. It says:

"Get your hands on the most innovative GPS yet. Don't wait. Through Feb. 11
you'll find it only online at REI.com."

So if someone wants one of those, I guess REI has an exclusive on it for a while. :?: I followed their link in the E-mail and they have it priced at $599.

GG, I just got through reading the same Gearmail from REI. That Colorado looks nice, but I just bought a 60CSx and haven't even had it on a trail yet. Its still winter, as you know. Anyway. I have to decide that I cannot keep up with all the new ones. I have an old etrex Legend, a Garmin iQue M3 that I use in the car, and now the 60. I wanted to replace the legend with a color one, but am glad I didn't and bought the 60 instead.
The prices keep going up too. I will stay for a while.

The plot thickens. 8)

Do you know if Garmin is sticking to their 1000-waypoints-is-enough-for-everyone stance in this new model? Because if they are, I might go grab one of my old Garmies, put a couple .30 caliber holes in it, and mail it to Garmin HQ with this note:

Dear fellow geeks,

NO, 1000 waypoints IS NOT enough for everyone. I rode out of my expected area, and a few more waypoints might have prevented what I did to this poor ole Garmy in frustration when I got lost.
LMAO that is funny GG
Sounds like Bill Gates no one will ever need more then 256 k on a computer what a joke almost as good as the Rhino 530 GPS one more for the target range but I will use a 50 cal

So it goes, Trainman. One day we're hip with our 60's, and the next day we're a couple of nobodies with antique gadgets. And just to make sure we know we're nobodies, REI even E-mails us to tell us.

Hey Vulcan, don't get me started with the Rino 530's. You know what label I put on the box they're sitting in, right? If it weren't for not wanting to dirty up Utah with litter, they'd be laying at the bottom of a bluff out by Paunsaugunt Plateau. And I'd give you their coordinates so you could put a 50-cal hole in each from all the way over by Beaver. Of course the coordinates would've probably been wrong if I got them off the 530's.
