GPS...

Postby Keith Strong » Thu Jan 18, 2007 1:18 pm

I am curious. Which GPS are you using, but more imporantly WHY did you choose that GPS? Does it have a feature another did not? Price? Screen size?

We all generally use Magellan.

I started off using Magellan, because they used SD cards and Garmin uses(used) proprietary cards....that may have changed.

I have a SportTrak Pro, but they don't make it anymore. Dusty and Larry both have the Exporist XL (nice GPS with color screen)...and that's the one I want to upgrade too.

With the Explorist XL and the SD cards....storage is limitless. It really helps to get the TOPO 3D software, as you can download more detailed maps.

OK, so I am trying to understand. What makes teh Explorist XL so much better than say, and Explorist 400? Other than memory size, I dont see why I want the XL more?

The XL is the only Water PROOF GPS....plus it has a beautiful color screen.

Big advantage is the huge color screen and an SD Card for unlimited storage. I have the entire US covered in two different base maps, and can still add as many waypoints and routes as I want

Right. Here's my post for a while back....after a scroll down the page I saw it.

You can use the Magellan product comparison to see the differences.

I have the Sportrak Pro....waterPROOF. It got soaked in a rain storm. I sent them the GPS and the photo of the day I used it....and they sent me a new one and a new carrying case.

most all hand held gps are waterproof to the IEC Standard 60529 IPX7. this means they are supposed to be good to submerge under one meter of water for 30 minutes.

Well, upon further research I agree with your previous post Ken. IT is between the 600 and the XL. Down side is I would really like the have the altitude, temp, baro pressure, blah blah, but I really want the bigger screen. The decision has to be which do I want more  I found them for $280ish on the web...
