Soda Springs Road

Postby hemingray » Sun Jul 22, 2012 6:12 pm

Took the blue Grizzly out for a road ride - 50 miles on that non-power steering beast is like 100 on the other one. But, the weather sure was nice up there!

First, a stop to see if there is anything left of Westville (the Westville quad (map) is named for the non-existent town). I did find a nice pond.

The rest is a number of nice views of the area.

It really was stunningly clear. You guys gotta come up this way sometime - it's a bit of out and back, but you can basically unload in the middle of things and ride to the end, then ride to the other end with some fabulous scenery in between. There are some good loops along the way.

That place looks vaguely familiar. Except for the pond and that meadow. Did you start on the west end?

P.S. - Did you run into any search & rescue people asking for directions?

The pond is near the paved part of Foresthill Road; Westville was a specific destination for me. As for the meadow, you passed by it once, it's the center of a big horseshoe curve at the Lost Emigrant Mine Road. And no, I didn't see any SAR troops yesterday. :-) I only encountered 1 car, 2 quads, 2 motorcycles, and 2 freeway-4-wheeler jeeps and half of that was east of The Cedars.

I did start at Robinson Flat - as long as it's an out-and-back, might as well stay close in terms of my drive time. The county graded the road a fair way out there, so except for the rocky sections where they can't scrape because it just turns up more rock, it was a fairly smooth and fast bit of riding. Sometime - keeping your 100+ mile requirement in mind - you should ride out from Soda and I'll meet you at Robinson Flat and show you the western side of things and by the time you get back, you'll probably make the 100 miles!

Here's a panorama of the Royal Gorge/Snow Mountain/Palisade Creek area. It still doesn't do it justice - the hugeness of the view rivals that of Big Valley Bluff to the west on the other side of the river. The panorama is about 180 degrees.

Shouldn't read this stuff on a work night. All I want to do is ride!..
