Yuba Pass

GrizzlyGuy and I linked up at Little Truckee Summit and set out for a trip over to Yuba Pass via Treasure Mountain. He's been there before, I haven't.

First signs of many are at the corner of the 5 and 15 roads.

GrizzlyGuy thinks maybe he aired up too much anticipating our road run. So we stop here something like 7 miles in and it turns out the sloppy handling is due to something else.

After a plug and some airing up (and down too), we're on the roll again....

Climbing up we get a view over to the south of the mountains near the Bowman Lake area.

The forest over here is very health.

We come to a spot where the winter sports routes diverge. We take the snowmobile route to the left which goes up, and which turns out to be a hoot.

Typical of this area - really nice riding.

More signs at the end of the winter routes, at an old corral. The USFS has chased most of the remaining livestock operations out.

We're riding on the edge of a ridge towards Mills Peak. I liked this little hollow for the really big old trees at the edge.

Here's a trail that actually says we're allowed!

It leads up to the Kelly Cabins (GG might disagree with me, but this is what the TNF Visitor Map calls them.)

They're pretty shot - here's half of the second floor down on the first. I was struck with the concept of what tales these cabins could tell, having once been some pretty awesome hand-built log cabins.

Eventually we end up at Mills Peak. As you approach the peak, there is a sheer cliff (which GG was eyeballing as a hang glider launch).

The peak has a beautiful view of the Mohawk Valley.

You can see Lassen - on a clear day this must be spectacular.

The Sierra Buttes are close by.

Over towards the Sierra Valley, Beckwourth Peak stands out, looking like the volcano that it is. Portola and Highway 70 are to the left of Beckwourth.

The roads are just so cool over here - I think it's going to be my new favorite area, even though it's an hour longer to get to.

A side trip to Coburn Lake - what a nice little spot. If you've ever driven on Highway 89 through the Sierra Valley, you cross Berry Creek - this is the source.

We decided to follow a road with a lot of promise for going through from there, but were rewarded with a dead end after 100 - yes, GG counted them - waterbars. So, 200 waterbars for nuthin' except a slight view of Maiden Valley and this log clogged pond.

Great area, loads of stuff to explore, many junctions and views all over. Can't wait to go back! (And I double checked to see if my flat kit is in good shape when I got back home, it was. So GG, we would have had more patches and glue if you needed them....)

I knew there was a reason why I didn't bother bringing my camera. That place looks better in your photos than in real life!

Your federal government at work: not only did they get the name wrong, they even got the forest wrong (the cabins are north of the TNF border in Plumas NF): :lol:

LOL, earlier today I sent in an order to Rocky Mountain ATV for 8 (count 'em) *8* tubes of rubber cement. Those suckers are 1 Oz each, instead of the teeny-tiny fraction of an ounce that they give you in the plug kits and their refills. I think I'll be set for life. :D

More pics of GG repairing his tire!! I didn't think it was possible. Ya know Eric, that's borderline mechanical.....

Not all of our Polaris quads are as unreliable as Mr. Hower's. I still wanna go on that tour as well. Never did get to see Gold Lake - thanks Ken! :finger: :lol:

Yeah Kendo, I think I've mastered rubber and glue, can clean a mean spark plug, so I think it's time to move onto the advanced stuff like nuts and bolts. I know these are advanced because a mechanically inclined guy like Ken can't even keep them from falling out of his quad. :lol:

"Not all" is a fair statement, but a more accurate statement might be "only yours ISN'T unreliable". That's not Ken's quad in the 3rd photo and this shredded mechanical thingy you guys are taking out wasn't from his: :P

Let me know when you want to ride all the way to Gold Lake and tag it. We could even start from your camping spot off Henness Pass road by Stampede to really rack up the miles, that ought to put us in the 150 mile range. Run down to Bassetts or Sierra City for lunch on the way, do a few more side trips or whatever, and you'd have a 200 mile day. Carrying enough gas and monkey butt powder is all you'd need to worry about. :)

Hellcat, that would be awesome! I'm not into the rock crawling scene, but give me a chance to put 3 digits on the odometer and I'm all over it. We'd be in the 150-ish mile range starting from there. Heck, we could even start from Bordertown for a few more miles.

I still need to do a 200-mile day. I think Flyin Boy and I missed one by like 20-30 miles in Utah. If you have any other ideas about making the ride longer I'm all ears. :D

Reno to Vegas??

I know it's possible, because the Ultra 4 cars will be doing that in August. I "THINK" you can buy the GPS course at the race.

I don't rock crawl since I have no skid plates and can't afford repairs. I like exploration and riding as far and long as I can. Let's brainstorm on saturday over pizza.

This would be epic!!!!!! Well over 200 mi. Would it be one way or round trip. I saw that some guys on Reno 4x4.com did a similar trip east across nevada and back in jeeps not ohv's.
