Virginia City - 2012

Postby Ken » Sun Apr 29, 2012 5:42 pm

So...Kendo and I head out again to ride from Reno to Virginia City. We follow our tracks from 2009 and arrive outside of town to eat lunch. We run into a couple, Todd and Nondas. They live out in the Highlands....RZR s....ride there all the time. Todd tells us we can ride through town....he offers to take us on a tour....and away we go! We drive through Virginia City...through the streets...we have a Sheriff in front of us...Quad with 2 kids, we're in RZR's...and EVERYONE IS HAPPY. Heaven!

We ride the ridgeline around and down to Mound House (a town). Todd says there's KILLER pizza there....he shows us...and we get gas. We take another road...and loop back to VC....then through town again...and Todd takes us another way back to our truck....AWESOME day. Highly recommend going the next time.

Here's the video

Cool! That sounds a lot like riding in Utah, you head right on into the towns like you belong there. Kind of a far cry from doing a mad dash down a Reno street to get across Hwy 395, eh?

Did you guys happen to go up onto Mt. Davidson? It's right up above town to the WSW and is supposed to have a flag pole up on top. I'd like to get up there sometime for ham radio stuff but there ain't no way I'm climbing all the way to the top of that sucker on foot with all my gear.

Here is a map, I don't know if that pink route exists or not, I just saw it on the topo map:

We ran along the side of that...they call it Ridgeline Road...or at least Todd did.

You can see our route around there in Red. A few points of interest I've noted.

Image

Here's your area on Google Earth, close up....It appears to me, there is a road that gets pretty darn close to the top...it kind of fades out near the top.

And yes!! it's wonderful to ride through and not feel like a criminal. Knowing how they deal with it around there...I don't think we'd have any problem at all, crossing at the next intersection, that has nothing...and we probably wouldn't have gotten shit there either...unless we totally went driving down the main drag.

This was kind of funny....after we cross the main road...we drove through the backyard of this little house/building, whatever....the trail went right behind it....I just went with Todd flow....

Are you thinking it's SOTA time again? Looks like where the "road" conks out, it's about 100' elevation to the top.
Wherever I go, there I am

Thanks Ken for putting together that most-excellent info that is practically epic! =D>

LOL, I guess anything is possible if you GO with the Todd FLOW. Hopefully Todd signs up here on the forum so we could learn more of his secrets. Pizza, gas, trails... he probably even knows where to find the hottest chicks. :P

Yup, that's what I'm thinking! Two Reno guys activated Mt. Davidson for the first time a couple weekends ago. I don't know how they got up there, might have even hiked all the way {gasp} but it does look like we could get within 100 vertical feet if that road turns out to be open. I guess it's going to start getting pretty hot over there but it could be a good one for late fall.
