43 and 44 roads

Postby hemingray » Sun Oct 30, 2011 7:49 pm

I almost didn't bother with a ride this weekend, but with some weather forecast for the end of the week, I figured I better not waste a nice fall day!

Went to Robinson Flat and decided to ride the Cavanah Ridge - Last Chance loop and check some more side roads on my list. Scored two loops (I hate out-and-back!) and came close to two mines (but will have to hike them another day - the roads ended short of them).

Down the ridge was a nice warm ride with the sun high. Stopped at Deep Canyon Creek, where the sun wasn't getting very high in the sky.

A look up Deep Canyon from above, looking east towards Little Bald Mountain.

LOTS of logging in the area, resulting in some super smooth dance floor roads.

Image

Wasn't this nice of the FS... (the "form number" for the sign is from 1978!)

Image

Interesting survey marker. $250 fine in 1926 - that would be $3204 in today's bucks.

Image

Wow - what a bearing tree, I'm amazed it's still alive with all of these markers.

Everything's big on logging machines.

That's a lonnggg arm!

I found this to be ironic.

Those trees don't know how close they are....

Image

That smoke I saw last week from Sawtooth Ridge and guessed Cavanah Ridge - I was short one ridge, it was on Last Chance. It's been burning for a week, there are pine needles on some of the charred ground and only the stumps are smoking now.

Image

The mixed bag of logging - this road led to some old mine diggings, guess this was on the closure list. (that's a gi-normous berm)

Image

I call these "Danger Berries".

And, a stop along Foresthill Road on the way back to look at Sawtooth Ridge and Big Valley Bluff across the canyon. I stop here on almost every trip - the view from Hogsback here is just so impressive.

Killer pics...as usual.
