Soda Springs Road
Well, liked it the previous weekend, so this time I rode over Soda Springs (the real one, as close as you can get anyway) from Robinson Flat. Apologies if you've seen some of these sights before, GrizzlyGuy and I rode this area a year ago in July.
Looking up at the Sierra Crest.
The juvenile Duncan Creek, just down from the source.
The bridge is an old railroad flat car. (I inspected it before crossing it!)
Flowers galore.
Pretty brushy in places. While riding through it, my mind was inventing how to mount twin gas-powered hedge trimmers on each side of the quad
This was the sign at the corner of Soda Springs Road and the 96 Road down to French Meadows a weekend ago.
What a difference a week makes! (I love Placer County!)
The always-present (to me, at least) Snow Mountain with the end of Wabena Point in the foreground.
As you ride along, you get closer.
I love this picture - there is so much geology visible here. Devil's Peak is a basalt column volcanic plug, there are andesitic lahars ("frozen" volcanic ash mudflows) to its left, there's the white granite of the Sierra batholith (frozen magma, once below the surface) and the intruded Jurassic period rocks visible up close are all mixed in this view. One book calls the Sierra Nevada "a geologist's nightmare" because there is so much mixed up twisted rock in the entire range.
On this same spot are some cool twisted old trees - some kind of cedars, I believe.
Another view of the much older rock, old trees and the granite on the other side of the North Fork American canyon.
Watch out, the first step is a doozie, 2000 feet down to the river.
Another look at Devil's Peak, and as far as I know, there is only one spot on I-80 that you can see it (for a very short time when you're heading west as you pass Boreal Ridge.)
The upper North Fork American River area. Castle Peak is at left in the distance. The back side of Mt Lincoln and Mt. Disney (Sugar Bowl) is in the middle. The road goes from where I am keeping to the right, crosses the North Fork American, then eventually through the forested area and climbs out to the left at Serene Lakes (a.k.a. Ice Lakes).
The drive-through creek is pretty dry now.
Decided to run up the 50 road for more views. This is, I believe, Granite Chief.
After cresting the very upper part of the Foresthill Divide, there's a view to the south of French Meadows Reservoir.
Fudge! Last time I saw this gate, Grizzly Guy and I cruised past it. Locked this time though. 14 wasted miles (7 out and 7 back)... :-/
On the way back, a cindery red lava outcropping.
The south-facing slopes were covered with yellow daisy-like flowers. It was probably 75 degrees on the warmer slopes - really nice.
After this, a pretty fast trip back up the hill and down to Robinson Flat. There are a fair amount of bowhunters out already. I did see one 8-point buck, but he was safely on the game refuge side of things.

sweet shots.
a local trail had some of those gates installed. and i found out that if your walk beside your atv and duck you and drive it underneath the gate
just in case you r riding and the gate gets closed behind you.

The picture angle makes it look possible - but it wasn't. (I've driven under some trees that way though!!)Kodiak wrote:sweet shots.
