ATVOBSESSION

Off to Barney Cavanah Ridge today, this time from Robinson Flat where there is no snow (yay!). Wanted to explore some side roads. Unfortunately Grizzly #1 is still in the shop so I took the workout machine (660 w/no power steering) and it temporarily doesn't have the GPS mount (doh!). I got tired of taking the GPS in and out of the bag on the bike, so I didn't hit all the roads I wanted to. Still, I found a mine! It actually had somewhat of a building.



What abandoned mine doesn't have an abandoned loader or bulldozer?



There's a cableway above the creek, I think the mine was on the other side of the canyon and they hauled the ore over to this side to process it. (Topo map says Grizzly Mine on the other side - how appropriate!



Lots of visible machinery remnants.

Everyone likes wildflowers, right?



After that, up to the intersection of the 44 and 33 roads, and up Last Chance Road to the 43 (Robinson Flat) road and then on to Soda Springs Road for a bit.



Volcanic mudflow ("lahar") frozen in a ridge.



Looking west, Mt. Diablo is floating above the other mountains (very faint).



Nice day up there - 68 to 72 degrees. Boy I missed my power steering....

Thanks! I've been waypointing more and more mines. Most are nothing - the Sierra View Mine just off the 43 road near Mosquito Ridge has nothing visible. Once in awhile - bingo! This one was cool because so many of those roads that go quite a ways (and are not logging roads) are impassable. What was funny is that this site was not waypointed, it was a lucky find on a spur.

This a great loop for mines - they are all over the place.

Thanks! That thing looks like 70's or so. Interesting things I learned: Rotax was founded in 1920. They moved to Austria in 1943. Their engines were first installed in snowmobiles in 1962 and Bombardier bought them in 1970.

Nice! It's good that you are waypointing mines. With the price of gold skyrocketing like it is, we might need to revisit them all up and do a little diggin'.

Maybe. You know what state we live in - it's impossible to mine anymore. You have to actually document how you are going to close your mine before you even open your mine. EPA, water control boards, toxic waste boards, mining boards, etc. are all involved before you can pick the first rock up. It's not surprising to me now why all that junk is abandoned where it is.

Sadly, the American Fire of 2013 burned up the little mine building,only the tin remains.



The little dozer survived, amazingly.



The area was burned over badly.
