The Fabulous Nineteen Road
Fearing too much snow on Meadow Lake Rd from the Truckee side, I decided to hit FR-19 at Emigrant Gap (fearing snow on the Yuba Gap part). Hit some of my favorite spots.
Big Valley Bluff never gets old.
I could sit here all day!
Spring is still springin'!
This is, in fact, a road.
Cool log - reminds me of some alien creature or something.
There is still snow melting, feeding small seasonal streams. Though it will be dry soon here, this actually the beginning of Monumental Creek.
Mears Meadow
On foot, I tracked around looking for the spring in Mears Meadow. Found it.
Not much, but it's putting out.
If you look closely at my GPS, there's a dashed black line (the red lines are my wanderings). On the old topos, that's marked "Jeep Trail".
Here's the trail - very faint, but definitely there. Unfortunately, logging has obliterated most trails, whether foot or jeep. This one came up from Lake Valley. Cool find. (I like reconciling the topos to reality)
Oh crap, where did I park? (I always take the GPS on foot!)
The wraparound monsoonal moisture is evident, but not making it over the crest today.
Gee, another look at the North Fork American River canyon.
Discovered a new view of the canyon, a bit lower down.
Still spring!
I call this one "May I have a cone please?"
After this pic, I noticed that a rear CV joint boot got speared and was spewing grease. Decided to call it a day and motored back to the truck (fortunately close).
On the way back, practiced a little of my old hobby at E-Gap (a.k.a. Emigrant Gap)
And again at Gold Run, with a very late (something like 7 hours!) Amtrak #5.
This is the overflow from Drum Forebay - fairly low light, so the camera took a slow exposure. Nice.
Nice day onThe Fabulous Nineteen.

Thanks! The waterfall is really not much more than a canal, but makes a nice show. It's only about 100 yards off I-80 on a side road.

Re: The Fabulous Nineteen Road
Nice shots! Check out Waymarking.com sometime. While you're out exploring you might want to find and log benchmarks, monuments, relics etc. for fun. You can find benchmarks on the ExpertGPS topos, mark them, then ride/walk right to them like you did that spring.
P.S. - You probably already know this, but don't eat or wrap fish/food in any of the broad-leafed plants that you have in the picture right above your topo maps. They have a nasty neurotoxin in them. Of course if you want to bump-off your riding partner... suggest a natural salad for lunch!

Re: The Fabulous Nineteen Road
Just awesome Dave.
On a side note...you said you take GPS when walking...My cousin was deer hunting in Colorado one year....Tracked this deer for an hour...finally lost him....decided to go back. Started walking in the direction he THOUGHT he parked his jeep. Said ah, I'll check my GPS....pulls it out...Bang...10 minutes walking BEHIND HIM. WIthout GPS...ugly.

Re: The Fabulous Nineteen Road
@Ken - yikes. I have a good sense of direction, topography etc., but when everything looks the same, it's a little spooky!
@GG - I'll remember those plants... I'd like to grow some here for my deer friends.
I'll look on that site - but here is another quest. It's intriguing - what IS the "Bent Monument"?

I don't know, but if you Google it you get a lot of map-related results like this one:hemingray wrote:I'll look on that site - but here is another quest. It's intriguing - what IS the "Bent Monument"?

You're going to have to hike out to it, take a few photos, and let us know!

Yep - I've Googled it to death, with no meaningful results. It's just there. Hopefully this year will be the year...
