Red Star once more

Postby hemingray » Sat Jun 25, 2011 7:37 pm

Decided to go back to Red Star Ridge and the blocking trees. It was a zoo on Mosquito Ridge Road today - a bike ride, and the Western States Endurance Run. Fortunately I like to take the road slow. The runners were using the trail along Red Star because Robinson Flat still has too much snow.

Anyway, wasn't a big deal - just wanted to finish whatever roads I could find.

This is the tree that I spent time on last week. It was a brute.

Image

I don't know what this shrub is, but between last week and this it's all blooming. Riding through it is like riding through honey - it's hugely scented. Where are the bears?

Image

Last week's tree block removed.

Image

Choices... Despite the well used look, the fork on the right ended in 100 feet with tons of downed timber.

Image

Red Star Point isn't all that exciting - it's not a lot higher than the rest of the ridge. Here I am looking back towards the upper part of the ridge.

Image

Coming back and looking for the Red Star Mine was a wash too. The roads are pretty overgrown. This actually was passable! (gotta watch for hidden logs though!)

Image

However, I did find this little unmarked mine. The adit was collapsed, and the mine equipment was just downhill from it.

Image

Image

I spotted the Red Star Ditch. The road uses the grade of the ditch for a bit.

Image

Loaded up the quad and stopped by Duncan Creek - you can see the water level here where it's over someone's campfire ring.

Image

On the way back down the 96 road, I turned off at the old Mosquito Ridge Lookout road and tried to get to the old lookout site. Unfortunately, I ran into this about 2/3 of the way:

Image

and then this:

Image

I had the chain saw, but that was ridiculous. We can chalk up a lost old lookout site to overgrowth and no maintenance. Too bad - bet it's a good view.

Last shot: the Middle Fork American River below Foresthill. Lots of whitewater, the kayakers must be in heaven this year.

Image

Enough of Red Star, think I will head for Truckee next trip.

I would say a LOT of cutting. It was too hot and I was tired, I didn't walk past the last picture. It was trees and brush as far as I could see on the flat there.

Not sure how much it's worth, the lookout site might be just a flat spot on the hill! Helester Point LO has some old stairways and other stuff, Big Valley Bluff has some foundations - hard to know what's at Mosquito Ridge LO. The point is .66 miles from where I stopped - could be a heck of a lot of cutting. Earlier, the dry old oak stuff did a number on my chain, time for a new one before I do any more cutting and since most of these trees are old and dry, it would be quite the chore.

Nice! Sounds like Red Star is rode out without some serious amateur logging work. It kind of reminds me of the "back side" of the Hunter Lake Trail as you descend down to the Truckee River. Lots and lots of potential side trails and roads, but there are so many downed trees that you get blocked within a hundred yards or so.

Well, so much for not going up to that area again for awhile - couldn't resist. Part of the fun is going up there - the rivers are still running high.

Oxbow Reservoir - downstream of the confluence of the Middle Fork American and Rubicon Rivers.

Image

The confluence - Middle Fork American is on the right, and on the left is the Rubicon plus the output from the Ralson Powerhouse, which is actually Middle Fork water taken from the Interbay Powerhouse output.

Image

A view from Ralston Ridge over to Mosquito Ridge where the lookout was located.

Image

Red Star Point - sits pretty low compared to Ralston Ridge where I am taking the photo from as well as Mosquito Ridge in the background.

Image

Red Star Ridge and the road from last week. Little Bald Mountain (Duncan Peak Lookout) is at the top right.

Image

Not much scenery today on the quad, but did find Duncan Creek a couple of miles downstream from last week's pic. 4-5 feet deep at this spot, running really cold.
