Strange Sighting at Stampede

Postby GrizzlyGuy » Fri Nov 05, 2010 7:32 am

I was out riding yesterday and I spotted an odd looking white thing down by Stampede. It is the dot on the lake bed up above the stump:

I got closer:

And even closer:

I waved at the pilot and he waved back. I made my way down to the lake bed on the other side of the small ridge I was on, and was riding toward this spot next to where the Little Truckee River flows in from the west:

Right about then I see the plane in a 45 degree bank coming over the ridge. He flew right at me and waggled his wings as he climbed out.

In unrelated news, one of my boots ended up full of water not too long after that photo was taken. Another story for another time... :-"

That is wild.
Hey GG, We shopuld ask forest service if we could build a 50" wide bridge at the river crossing to link the trail on the other side.
I Love riding in that area. We went from Peavine north to loyalton and back Sunday.

Sounds like you really put some miles on the quad! Californians think it's fun to ride to Bordertown, and I guess you Nevadans head for Loyalton instead. Next season if you really feel like airing it out some day, head for Bassets over on Hwy 49. It's a fast ride all the way and they even have gas and ice cream at the store/restaurant. I'm thinking that would be around 130 miles for the round trip. :)

Thanks, if they'd build some 50" wide bridges like Hellcat is talking about, boots wouldn't need to get wet! :P

Hey GG
Glad to see your getting out there before the hibernation begins! If you get that route to here worked out I have an additional 300 miles to add on :D We rode from Chemult past Summer Lake to Christmas valley then on to near Riley. Have you been to the Ponderosa HG launch site? We rode out to it. The ole Red-Grizzly has 8700 miles now.
Take care

Wow, sounds like a most-excellent ride RedGrizz! I haven't been to the Ponderosa launch but I've flown a few times from Hadley Butte which is basically south of Summer Lake outside of Paisley. Flyin Boy set that site's cross-country distance record several years ago with a flight back to the CA border and he still has the record. :)

Dang, sounds like you're going to need a new Grizzly soon. Yesterday I put in the fuel stabilizer and stowed the Grizzlies for the winter since it was snowing pretty hard. We only ended up with about 4" on the ground and now they are forecasting lots of sun for the next week. So, I might end up de-stowing mine and getting some more riding in (fingers crossed).

Next summer I want to spend some time checking out my ride-to-OR route in the area north of here and to the west of Susanville. If that area works out like I think it will, we should be ready for an attempt on Bend before the Mayans bring the world to an end in 2012. [-o<
