FR-45 and Monumental Creek

Postby hemingray » Sun Sep 12, 2010 10:06 am

This area is accessed off FR-19 from the Emigrant Gap area. The Bradley and Gardner canal, a.k.a. the Placer County canal ran from the East Fork of the North Fork of the North Fork (yes, the EFNFNFAR) at about the 4840' contour all the back to Dutch Flat. It's very visible here at the North Fork Campground area on FR-19. As is typical, logging has ruined this artifact, at one point it's been made into a logging road.

The canal was completed about 1860.

I stopped to take a look at the North Fork of the North Fork American where FR-19 crosses it. There's a nice spot to park and walk around.

Once on the 45 road, I visited a few stub roads. This one led to a hunter's camp:

which is located on Monumental Creek:

This area spends time in forest, older roads and open ridges:

Monumental ridge dominates this area

As does Quartz Mountain

It's fun riding, though not a whole lot of scenery. After loading up, I went up to Tunnel Mills Group Campground to check out the East Fork of the North Fork of the North Fork American. It was in deep shade, but still running a fair amount of water.
