Geocaching in Russel Valley Area

Postby GrizzlyGuy » Mon Jul 12, 2010 9:36 pm

I went out to do some more trail mapping today and thought I'd take my first shot at geocaching. I ended up finding two. One of them (this one) was hidden in an old tree trunk:

Inside the crack on top:

An ammo can with a label on it:

Mini Mike would have loved it, as it contained many strange creatures:

And various trinkets:

I didn't take anything but did write in the logbook before I put it back where it was:

Image

The other one I found (this one) was tiny, and I only found it because the three pine cones at the bottom of the stump looked staged:

Remove the cones and voila, there it is, a tiny one:

It only contained a few logbook pages and a pencil:

This shot gives you some scale so you can see how small it is:

I re-hid it in a way that hopefully looks slightly less staged:

I searched for two other small ones, but after spending about 20 minutes on each, I couldn't find them. I ended up coming home early as the engine was wanting to stall out while coming down hills in compression or otherwise when the RPMs were low. I changed the spark plug when I got home, hopefully that was all it was. :(

ROFL! Well now we know where she lives if Mini Mike ever wants to drop by and yell at her. Or take a Mini Poop in her new Mini House.

Rule #1 your not suppose to show pictures of geocache locations, the muggles will find and steal them, lol.

Let us know if the spark plug fixes the problem...

Dohhhh! I didn't realize that it was a no-no to post pictures. I had to google "muggle" to figure out what you guys were talking about. I'm such a newb.

Yes Dave, I prefer to ride on weekdays when there are less people out and about and that means I end up riding alone a lot. That's why I carry so much survival and communications gear (I suck at mechanics).

Hmmmm…. :-k

With so many people getting ham licenses and 2m radios, we should think about doing a T-hunt ride. Using ATVs is probably a lot less risky than how we used to do them in college: car loads of kids racing down San Luis Obispo city streets, doing about 70 mph, at night, with gangly antennas hanging out the windows. On one hunt the kid hid the transmitter under an old railway car down at the railroad yard. Dozens of unfortunate bums were rousted from their sleep as their "homes" were searched. Fortunately none of them got too mad at us. They might have thought we were undercover cops since everyone had radios. :)

Hey I never knew what a muggle was either, I had to google it too when people were talking about it, I'm new to it as well, well sort of, haven't been too active. I think your first time just shows you really know how to use your GPS and hunt, great job. Are you posting your results on Geocaching.com?

Yes, I make an entry into each cache's log at Geocaching.com if that is what you mean.

I went out today on my 'engine test ride' and found 9 more. One of those was one that I couldn't find the other day. I spent another 15 minutes looking for it, was just about to give up, and rolled my eyes and craned my head up with the thought of failure. Right then I spot a strange silhouette hanging from a tree limb. That was it, a dinky little micro. Being the newb that I am I never thought to look up into the trees!

Changing the plug seemed to do the trick and the engine was smooth all day. Weird, because the Grizzly had just been in the shop for a full service and their invoice shows that they changed the plug. I guess they had a bad one from the factory(?).

after a while you kind of learn were to look and what to look for when geocacheing, you just develop the eye, but then when you think you have it, someone comes along with a new twist and you have to add it.

Good finds, I love riding ATV's and Geocaching, makes for good times when you can combine the two.
