Anoher Forest Road 19 jaunt

Postby hemingray » Sun Jul 11, 2010 9:15 pm

One of my favorite areas is Tahoe Forest Road 19. It's a relatively short drive, it's easily accessible, and has a lot to offer. Today I did 54 miles - and that's an easy day there.

Parking is easy, just 1/4 mile past the start of the dirt.

Image

Lake Valley Reservoir is now below, viewed from Monumental Ridge.

Image

At Mears Meadow, the spring feeds this little seasonal creek.

Image

Image

Rode up to Quartz Mountain, then over to Lawton (Peak? Mountain?) Along the way are some reminders how winter can be a bit rough here. I can see this from my house - the face of the ridge gets the full brunt of winter storms.

Image

I hiked from the end of the trail to the top, about 2/10 of a mile, about 100 ft up. Only "Lawton" is shown on the maps, but sure enough, there's a benchmark. Still no peak or mountain or whatnot.

Image

The view is great - wish I could have done a panoramic shot, but the footing is too rough for me.

Image

Hiking down, I noticed that the trees are missing their tops, or have grown back some strange ones.

Image

Out to Big Valley Bluff. Here is exhibit "A" on why I think we won't see new signage even after the route designation is done.

Image

And the view from Big Valley Bluff never gets old.

Image

Across the canyon the patchwork of burned and unburned shows well after two winters. This was the Westville Fire that combined with the Government Spring fire. It could have been a lot worse.

Image

Still, it's very evident.

Image

On down FR-19, before it hits pavement near Texas Hill, I turned on a new side road. Nice one, well built! Has all the promise of getting to the "other side" on FR-45.

Image

DOH! A friggin' tree! Dang - no chainsaw.

Image

Oh well, back to the top. Lots of wildflowers on the hills here.

Image

Went down a steep road that wound down into Burnett Canyon. At the bottom was a super bridge - the beams looked to be at least 18 inches, with a nice steel U-channel deck.

Image

Unexplainably, the road then climbed very steeply, leveled out, then conked out. Nothing looks logged, Strange.

On the way back up it though, I spotted this old boiler (or something).

ImageImage

I then went back to the top of FR-19 and took what I call the Brushy Road down into Big Valley and up the other side to FR-38. I found two trees down and ended up winching my way over them because I hate to backtrack!

At the top, the reward is Pelham Flat, which is more of a pond.

Another nice day on The Fabulous Nineteen!

Wow, more nice shots from the master ATV photographer. If I ever get back into making videos, you need to be my Director of Photography.

You might want to see if that benchmark is in the database over at Waymarking.com. If not then you found a new one. Here is one that I entered: http://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WM77 ... _T17N_R15E

You're welcome - I love to take pix. Ask GrizzlyGuy - a couple of weeks ago out in the Soda Springs area there were a lot of times he came round a corner only to find me standing on the quad taking yet another picture.

Here's my Ansel Adams wannabe photo on this trip:

That's pretty darned Ansel-y, but it would be even better if you used Photoshop to add something dramatic going on in the sky. Ansel would probably wait around hours/days/weeks for just the right moment to take his shots, but who needs to do that when you can cheat and use modern technology. :)

Terrain reminds me of British Columbia riding.

I have a few shots that I could steal clouds from, but I just don't have the time to play. Wish I did!

Eigermike - excellent shots on your Flickr page!
