Treasure Mountain/Lake of the Woods

Postby GrizzlyGuy » Fri Jul 02, 2010 7:12 pm

I did a mapping ride yesterday in the Treasure Mountain area and eventually made my way to Lake of the Woods via a new (to me) route. I came in from the east (blue line), picked my way through the rocks/stumps/logs up onto the "high" trail with great views (red line), then down to the lake:

Looking NNE out to the Sierra Valley (where Sierraville is) from the LWVIEW2 viewpoint:

Looking south towards Mt. Lola:

Found a fun stream crossing on the lower section of Bonta Creek, NW of Treasure Mountain:

Another shot of the stream a bit up from where the road crosses:

The brush was blooming across the entire east side of Treasure Mountain:

I rode a real brushy trail/road across that side, and found some hitchhikers after I emerged:

66 miles in all, and many new tracks from my GPS map. A successful mission ahead of this weekend's tourist onslaught.

Great area - do you know if you can get to Coburn Lake and Maiden Valley (north of Bonta Saddle)? I have to come over there - that is such a neat area!

Yeah, there were a few people camping at the lake and the guy on the lake was in a canoe fishing. I didn't shoot any video, just blasting around collecting new tracks.

I tried to ride to Coburn Lake a few years back from F12, but the logging road that looked like it would go there was blocked off with a berm. I haven't tried for Maiden Valley. You might be able to get to those places if you started down at Sierraville. I don't know if the roads heading out of there are public or private.

Hey Dave, can you ride tomorrow? One of these days I need to head south from Soda Springs/Ice Lakes and collect tracks out that way. I was thinking that would be a good place for a 2-day ride, but might be able to hit a lot of it in one long day. The view at Royal Gorge ought to be a good one.

I can do that - been wanting to ride that road for awhile. I've been there in the truck - the views are quite something.

Let me know when and where (I forget what's out there at the end of the paved road at Ice Lakes).

Cool! I've never been out there, so I guess we'd drive to the south end of Ice Lakes and unload wherever that road turns into dirt. We can meet any time you want to. Don't forget to bring extra gas. :)

I can only do an out and back tomorrow, but I'll bring a small extra can (plus my small Kolpin on the back). How about meeting there at 7-ish?

If you have a repeater in mind up there, let me know.

Yikes, that's early. How about 8 AM? That gives me an extra hour to caffeinate. :P

The repeater on Donner Summit should cover that area pretty good. 146.64(-) and tone is 131.8.
