We Did It! - Stampede Reservoir to Moon Rocks
Yesterday Ken and I rode from the parking spot on Henness Pass road near Stampede Reservoir out to Moon Rocks and back. It was somewhere between 110 and 123 miles round trip depending on who's odometer you believe. My GPS track log says 115.4 miles. Here is what the ride looks like from outer space:
To get across Hwy 395 we rode up and over Peavine, down Peavine Rd, north up the Western Pacific railroad tracks, then crossed 395 on the Red Rock Road underpass. You make the first left at the Shell Station then you're back on dirt heading up toward Granite Peak:
From there you wind your way around the north edge of Cold Springs, along the base of Petersen Mountain, cut NE to Red Rock Road (way out there), cross it and on to Moon Rocks. There are lots and lots of roads and trails out in the desert so you really need to pre-plan the ride and trust your GPS.
Ken was happy when following the little blue line on my GPS got us to the Red Rock Road crossing:
He was so happy when we reached this weird place near Moon Rocks:
That he climbed up to their hilltop altar and... I actually don't know what the hell he is doing:
Looking back the way we came from "Altar Hill":
And here we are at the actual Rocks of the Moon (his pictures are probably a lot better):
We saw two tigers on the way back, near where we crossed Hwy 395:
Then we discovered that our route up to the railroad tracks and down them was actually private property owned by someone who is known to shoot trespassers. Rats, there were no signs or fences on the way in from Peavine so we didn't know. The guy who stopped and warned us told us about another route over/around Peavine on it's north side that got us back to Dog Valley and on to our starting point.
A successful mission!
P.S. - SPOT did well at sending our real-time position in track mode, here is what my public SPOT page looks like today:

Great pics Eric...
I have more...just busy from WeRock and Jack's here at my house.
I think we're safe to say 114-115. My GPS tracks are 114 and yours are 115...I believe that more than the Odometer. Mine said 112...yours said 121.1

Thank you sir! Whenever a ride includes the potential to be arrested (such as for blasting down a city street to get across an interstate), that turns the ride into an adventure.Kodiak wrote:way to go guys thats awesome!!!

Yeah, Ken lead most of the way back and he had a solid track on his GPS, so we were moving pretty fast. I think that is why my odometer was off. He was going so fast that I was catching a lot of air on the woop-de-doos trying to keep up. I figure my tires must have spun an extra 6-7 miles overall while airborne, so that explains it.

We might have been stopped, but I don't think we stopped for that long.
Sometimes when riding in timber, in a canyon, etc. the signals don't get through to the satellites so you won't see an update for a while. That's my guess as to what happened.

Maybe it was that gate we were contemplating. Or planning the route around the tree.
