CLOSED TNF Trails - Ride Them While You Can!

Postby GrizzlyGuy » Fri Oct 08, 2010 1:05 pm

I've been going through the final record of decision from Tahoe National Forest's route planning process and trying to identify the cool trails that they are no longer allowing us on, after their Motor Vehicle Use Maps get published in a few months. Ride them while you can!

I've calibrated sections of their PDF map in ExpertGPS, and that allows me to see my GPS map ride tracks overlaid on their new map. If I have a track that IS NOT sitting over a trail/road on their map, then it will no longer be open.

Here is the first set, the Switchback Trail, Signal Peak Lookout trail and the Goat Trail: :crybaby:

What?!? The Committee Cutoff trail (that cuts over to Fordyce Creek Trail from Rattlesnake Road) is not shown as approved on their maps:

(Liberals in a forest service meeting)
lets close the forest so it will be safe!!! from those pesky humans.
oh and while we are at it how about we close the trails and make those crazy wreckless atv riders into criminals by making it illegal to ride on established trails.

wow. this sucks!

if you ride an atv and you don't vote these people out then you might as well sell your atv or clear out a spot in the garage cause that's the only place you'll be riding it.

ok rant over.

The Beacon Point Trail didn't make the cut (see my cursor arrow in map image). This is the one that takes off from Verdi Peak Road and heads north to Toiyabe NF and on up to Beacon Point. If you were riding the power line trail and continued straight across Verdi Peak Road, you would be on it:

Image

Toiyabe NF has it's end of this trail open, so this makes no sense. Toiyabe designates it T31074.

The power line trail through Hoke Valley is also missing from the approved routes. That's the red trail line inside the circle that runs almost N-S.

The power line trail that runs into Stampede (red trail line leaving the left edge of the image) is also missing.

Those of us who are not technically magnificent will not be able to decipher such things out there in the wild. I find the ENF maps to be totally confusing.

Yeah, and they are showing Meadow Lake Road as street-legal only. So I guess this year was my first and only Miyagi. :crybaby:

Oh, and the route that Ken takes from Meadow Lake to Washington for lunch? Street-legal only, once you turn off the county road that goes by Bowman Lake. :(

Yup. Hopefully their Motor Vehicle Use Maps will be better than this one-big-pdf map, but I kind of doubt it. I have Plumas's MVUM and it's pretty bad.

Ahhhhh.... That's good news!

More good news: I thought that they would close a bunch of the stuff in Gold Valley. It looks like they left all of that open. :)

We have to appeal the Washington road...this will wipe out the summer economy of Washington!! HUNDREDS of atv and UTV riders camp at the grounds, stay at the hotel...eat there. Think about our group?? Well over $100 in 1 day....multiply that by many groups during the summer.
The last words spoken before a YouTube video is filmed: "Hold my beer, now watch this..."

Yeah, and the biggest downer of their decision is that they have designated a TON of roads as street-legal only. You guys have heard me brag about how I have a trailhead 5 minutes from my house, right? That's no more. They designated the road that I park on as street-legal only and there is rarely any traffic on it other than mountain bikers. Now I'd have to trailer down that road to the point where the trail branches off, and turning my Hummer/trailer around at that point is a real beech. If I park where I usually park (just off the pavement on that road) I can easily see an enforcement ranger stopping and spending the whole day there, waiting for me to ride back to the Hummer so he can bust me.

The one comment I sent in asked them to keep as many of these roads mixed use as possible. I cited the roads heading out of Little Truckee Summit staging area as being really important. Well... they left Treasure Mountain Road (FS 05) mixed use, but they designated FS 15 street-legal only all year, and you need that one to get to the summit. Then from there, the FS 12 superhighway to Yuba Pass is also street-legal only except for Sept 22 through Nov 4 (hunting season). We rode both of those when we were trying for Gold Lake, when you lost a bolt and Scott broke a belt). Polaris's.... :P

It has always been illegal for us to ride the county roads like Henness Pass or Lemon Canyon, but the county sheriffs don't enforce it. Over at Prosser Dam, there is actually no other way to leave the forest service's staging area other than to take a county road. Again, no one cares.

But the non-county forest service roads... me thinks the enforcement rangers will be out there busting us. :(

I understand why they don't want us on paved roads like Fibreboard Road (FS 07). But the dirt roads? Come on....

I guess I will just have to test my luck. If its dirt, its open. If it paved and a short distance, Its open. Haul ass.
Confining all the ohvs to a few trails will do more damage then letting them spread out and go where they want. Maybe thats what they want, so then they can say, look at all the damage the ohvs have caused. Close it all down.

Here is another one, the fun trail going up onto the English Mountain ridge (to my ENGLISHVIEW waypoint) is closed:

Image

You won't be able to get this view any more:

Image
Image
Image

Here is a multi-cam video of the ride up that trail that you won't be able to experience in person: Sierra Mission

Note also that the road running past Sawmill Lake to Faucherie Lake is now street-legal only. This is ridiculous as the road is rough and a normal vehicle can't do more than 10 mph on most of it. This road, and the road is relatively smooth where the bikes are parked:

Image

No more riding out that road to this ultra-cool campsite with it's natural diving board:

The road/trail going between the new berms is on private property so it may or may not be open(?).
