Gold Valley, Snake Lake, etc.

Postby GrizzlyGuy » Fri Sep 28, 2007 7:30 pm

When Ken and Larry announced that TNF was dropping their fire restrictions on Wednesday, there was only one thing for me to do: mix some margaritas, grab my camping and video gear, and GO.

I headed out from Plumas Pines and arrived at the Plumas NF/Tahoe NF border (past the A-tree) at around 0900 Wednesday. The restriction signs were still up, but I ignored them:

I rode a loop around Hawley Lake, saw nice fall colors and granite:

Image

I stopped at the Sierra Hilton, but couldn't get a room:

Image

Yup, that's what it is called:

Image

Hawley Lake is actually private property, called Camp Nejedly. But they were nice enough to leave all the trail gates open:

Image

I took the side trail up to Snake Lake. That trail is a bit more challenging than the rest of Gold Valley trail that I was on. Nice lake:

Image

I started up the east side just a bit, but wisely (I think) stopped short of where the famous Trying to Break Stuff video was made.

Image

So I went on down Gold Valley trail and saw lots of great scenery:

I rode the Pauley Creek Trail, Big Boulder Trail, Smith Lake Trail and pretty much every other side trail that I could find. I didn't realize (until then) that Pauley Creek and Big Boulder become single track. Your quad will become a rusted hulk if you try to go any further:

Did anyone know Iron Mike? This is at Big Boulder Mine, where the Big Boulder trail turns into single track:

Image

Stunning views from there, I think Iron Mike would be happy with the plaque's location:

Image

My camp site off of Gold Valley trail was a great one, right next to some small waterfalls on Pauley Creek. I ignored this sign that was about 10 feet from the elevated fire pit...

Image

and with my folding shovel and campfire permit in hand... built a fire:

Image

Dinner was yummy:

Image

I kept my bear-scaring device nearby, what with all the scrumptious odors emanating from my cuisine:

Image

Dessert was great as well, although nothing really beats the homemade blue margaritas in that metal bottle {hic}:

Image

I did lots more riding the next day, then stopped to help these folks on the way home:

Image

They didn't have a plug kit. I did, but it was a fancy one with a gun that none of us could figure out how to work. Dohhhhh!! About an hour later, a couple of hunters came by in a jeep with a REAL plug kit, and we had them fixed up in a jiffy:

Lots of smiles to finish up a great ride:

I know Dave, making some noise is about all that lil' thing is worth. :(

What can I say: it's my wife's, she's an NRA certified firearms instructor, she swears it's the 2nd best easily carried weapon (2nd only to her 9mm Glock which she won't let out of her sight), and won't let me leave the house without it. :(

I'd feel a lot safer with my Remington 1100, or even the M1 carbine, but then I'd have to leave either the margaritas or the video gear at home to make room. No way am I giving up my chilled margaritas. Out of my cold dead hands...

Cool ride.

Did you hit Little Deer Lake? You read the plan to modify that road?

No, unfortunately I missed going to Little Deer Lake. I passed the turnoff to it on the way up to Snake Lake, made a mental note to check out that trail on the way down, then completely spaced it. :(

What plan and what are they going to do to the road?
