D2 came by the house yesterday. I was going to show him how to change a belt and you need to remove the primary clutch just to change a belt WTF?

Not sure if ALL AC motors - the V2 that is on mine is the Kawi 650V2. AC also makes thier own 650 H1.

the 400 is a Zuki motor. the 500 not sure and the 700 is also AC.

Well, in doing some more research (bored at work again) I found out that Cat is building thier own engine plant.

Currently the motor line up is like this:

250 - kymco
400, 500, 700 - Zuki (700 is the same as the king quad)
650V2 (not made in 07) Kawi
650 H1 - Cat (06 is first year for cat motor)

Also found out Zuki owns 35% of cat right now. Reason for the high motor %.

The new Cat engine plant will be producing future sled and ATV motors.

I am sure my brute 750 has the same problem since it's the 650's bigger brother how hard is it to pull the primary clutch??? I have never worked on a auto belt system.

Well Dave you saw me in Mina it only took about 20 minutes along with changing the jet in the carb. On the cats I think after a couple times you might be able to get it down to 20 to 30 minutes.
Scale on 1 to 10 I rate it a 6
I would rate my poo at about a 3
On the cats you need to totally remove the foot well, some kind of clutch shift out sensor on the cover three bolts 8 0r 9mm (my 5/16 nut driver worked great). There is another sensor that you need to get the wire connector apart this stays on the cover. Breather hose coupling, two clamps two # 2 Phillips screws. Then get the clutch cover off 10mm. You need a special tool to hold the primary from spinning to remove the retaining bolt (left hand threads and 19mm)for the primary. I very carefully used a long 3/8" extension a strap wrench would work also and cat sells one don't even want to know how much it would cost. Then you use the clutch tool to get the primary off. once the primary is off you only get half of it off ( the back pulley stays). The belt just fits right on. and reverse the about steps. You will want a little loctite med. duty blue or green for the primary retaining bolt.

Up to around 1500 on my cat and was more an inspection due to some squealing - Larry had mentioned he thought he heard it doing that when we were at Fordyce.

Turns out that it was just really dusty in there - Bill blew out LOTS of belt dust off the clutch primary.

Figured if we were inspecting it, pending on the belt condition. I would replace it and have the other as a backup.

The belt was in fine condition though.

Bill remember DAVE will have the same issue with his 750 (KAWI Motor) as well. I'm pretty sure he will have the same sensors on his.

D2,
I have the 04 650 v twin and have been able to change the belt without removing the clutches. It is tough but can be done. You just have to work it over the edge of the clutch. can't remember which one.
For good info on Arctic Cats try this site. Tons of usefull info.

Keith, Yea I do check Arcticchat all the time- even donated to the site GREAT info there for all of the models.

Bill, thats where I got the service manuals..

I heard of a few folks doing that by running over the rear (not the primary).

Bill did try to do that with some difficulty - maybe the belt is still in too good of condition for that :)

I will be ordering a clutch puller here next week. better to have the proper tools then try to do without and creating a bigger problem down the line.

Not worth it for the $35 for the puller.

People do that all the time....work on a 7,000 dollar quad and too cheap to buy a 25 or 35 tool to do it right.
