Odd low-oil clanking noise..

Postby BruteForce » Sun Mar 23, 2008 6:00 pm

I just put 40 miles on my 2005 Brute Force 750i, after getting it back from the service department. Services performed:

- Replace rear (left side) axle
- Rebuild carb, re-jet for altitude and new air cleaner
- Oil change and filter

After riding that 40 miles, we were going down a grated dirt road, doing about 30mph (it was running just great up to that point), when I started losing power and heard what sounded like lifters banging due to low oil.

Oddly, the Oil indicator light never came on.

Decided not to risk it, so I had the wife tow me back to camp (oh the shame of it!).

Upon inspecting the oil level, it appeared to be full, but very black (and dirty), so the shop may not have changed the oil after all.

On Monday, I intend to drain the oil and refill with 10w40 Synthetic Mobile-1 and install a new filter.

I'm hoping its nothing worse than just broken down oil.

Anybody else have this issue? I just find it odd that I had a fairly significant loss of power coupled with the clanking and am hopeful its nothing more serious.

Any tips on oil type and/or suggestions will be appreciated.

At least your quad had oil in it, last ride I took I lost all the oil  , but $2400. later and it should be all fixed ](*,) . It does not sound like yours could be that bad. I would not take any chances with it though, that is what I did and it ended up costing me.

Good luck

Well, Fish.. Seems I'm going to blow out your spend on ATV repair:

Well, my service center called me again today and my repair is now exceeding an additional $1000 in repairs and could be upwards of $2000.

In addition to last month's damage $800 (rear axle, carb. rebuild, oil), now we're looking at:

- Bent piston (crank) and possibly other damage due to losing a bearing
- Re-shim clutch and replace belt
- Cam chains replacement

ARGH! I could've bought another ATV with what I'm spending these past two months!

Let me throw more fuel (or is it oil) on the fire. I'm now up to $2900 in repairs since it seems the crank and rods require replacement! ](*,) #-o

No idea on why.. Service techniician indicates it could have been the oil (which they last changed) and Kawasaki indicates they've seen a few of these now.

As for hours/miles: ~450 hours and ~4500 miles thus far. It's a 2005.

Sorry to hear about that Brute Force, try getting the dealer (stealer) or Kawi to help out a little bit. $3000.00 is a good down on an 08.

Guess where my economic stimulus rebate is going? We got $1800 on Friday from Uncle Sam.
