What kind of mods do you have to your quad? oversized tires? If the secondary is not shimmed properly you will have belt issues. With the proper clutching the kawie tranny is very solid. without it you will have belt issues.

Are you pulling heavy loads or running around in high range when you should be in low?

im only running 26 inch tires , and i dont pull any heavy loads . as far as being in low or hi range i dont think it matters with the power it has ,cause it will rip the tires off it ant time i want it to .
JUNFAN how can you tell if the clutch is shimmed right or not ,shouldnt the dealer be able to tell if it is right or not .

yea, use low range for your slow going or hard pulls. i use it for anything under 20-25 mph (which is most of the time). it has the power to spin, but the belt takes the brunt of it. i have 900 miles and no belt issues. be careful in reverse, too. reverse is geared higher than low range.

That fact also applies to Polaris.

I wish Reverse was lower.....I don't really have any pressing need to go 30MPH backwards.

I have 3000 miles on my Brute and have yet to replace the belt. The check belt light comes on every 200-300 hours, but upon inspection, the belt is solid.

Additionally, I sometimes use the Brute to pull my 1500 pound trailer back into my driveway (in reverse, up hill), and other than leaving a little rubber behind from the tires spinning, I've seen no ill effect.

I do need to start doing my own maint. on the belt though, as its time-consuming and expensive to take it to the dealer everytime that light comes on.

How difficult is it to replace the belt yourself?

On a polaris...it's not too bad. There's actually a video on youtube...check the Polaris forum. I'll bet yours isn't that much different.

You need to buy a primary and secondary clutch pullers for the Kawis. The primary (drive pulley) is the easiest, and the puller is right around $30. The wrench for the secondary (driven pulley) I hear is a little bit more tricky to get off and you have to watch out for your shims underneath the mechanism.

Beane,

Just reading around I have heard of some Brutes that burn belts often. Although I do not think it is very common, it does sometimes happen. My parents have a Prairie with over 1000 miles, and they have had no issues.

I am not sure how to tell if it is shimmed correct, but if I am not mistaken all the shims do is move the secondary pully in an out in order to increase or decrease belt deflection. How does it feel when you take off, do you have to rev it alot to get the belt to catch? Does the ATV "jump" when you put it in gear? Or, is it hard to put in to gear? It could be a spring issue as well. No matter what it is, I would hope your dealer would be able to troubleshoot the problem.

Not to steer you away from this great forum, :D but check over at the highlifter forums. www.highlifter.com Click on "mudhole" and click "forum" Highlifter has a high amount of "mudders" who are usually quite prone to belt issues. You should be able to search tons of belt specific topics for the Brute.

Thanks,
Zack

I have been wondering about the life of the belts. what is the average life?? I have herd that the belts on the Pols are way easy to change compared to the kawi.........

I don't think there is any magic mileage on the belts. I baby my quad and at 1000 miles the belt was still within spec and could have gone at least another 1000 without problems. Flip side of that I was talking to a guy that sells parts, he frequently has guys wipe them out within the first 100 miles. Why? because belts are like brake, the need a little wear in period and if done correctly you're going to get great service from them. You go out and thrash it it's going to heat up and fail prematurely.

I was having problems breaking belts on my polaris and learned that my motor was out of alignment with my transmission. I would have the alignment checked just to be safe.
