back fire, no power, idles good ?

Postby auendave » Sun Jul 01, 2012 12:28 pm

I ran my quad through a creek a couple weeks ago, I hit a deep spot when I got to the othert side the quad started backfiring and no power, yesterday I started and it seemed fine I rode down a hill and then when I started back up same as before no power backfire, I changer the spark plug and it was black, so does this mean it is the carb? all help appreciated

Water in the spark coil? When one of the coil packs on my truck cracked and started getting some water in it, it would idle but miss under power. Wonder if you got some water in somewhere that's stuck around. The black on the plug could simply be from the misfiring?

dave, take the carb off clean out the bowl and jets then check your vent tube under the seat make sure it isnt kinked or pluged.allso put a inline fillter onj it.try that and a new spark plug .028/.031 gap. if that doesnt work need to try a cdi off another quad .you can allso unplug a few wires and make sure they are dry

finally got it done. rebuilt carb it was so dirty from backfire or what ever, took coil and all wires apart and dried them, put all back together and it seems to run all right, so now I have to take it out for a real tryout, up a few hills and a good run not just down the street in my neighbor hood. thanks for all the help

Sometimes what happens on these vacuum diaphragm carbs is when they backfire, it shoots the jet needle up past the seat and it never goes back in the jet. It'll idle fine, because it runs off a different set of jets for that circuit. The problem manifests when you go half to full throttle and it kicks the main jet. With the needle out of it's seat, it just pours fuel in and causes more backfiring and bogging down. Simply taking it apart and putting it back together correctly will usually fix the problem. Sounds like you'll be OK. Cleaning the carb is NEVER a bad idea.
