The passing of Dennis Mayer

Postby Ken » Tue Nov 18, 2008 12:26 pm

It is with the heaviest heart that I let you all know about the passing of Dennis Mayer last night at 2am. Dennis slipped in the tub and hit his head, and passed out on the way to the hospital on Sunday.

Dennis, for those that do not know him, was an integral part of keeping the Rubicon Trail open. Dennis worked tirelessly getting the full-time Ham repeater on the trail, working with the Rubicon Trail Foundation as Treasurer, working with FOTR and the Rubicon Oversight Committee. Dennis was probably the only person, that was liked by the County, DOT, RTF, ROC, FOTR and USFS. No one could say no to Dennis.

Many of you, including myself, have their ham radio license because of Dennis. Dennis organized Ham radio licensing classes every six months, because he understood the importance of communication out there in case of emergency.

There are no feet big enough, to fill the shoes of Dennis Mayer. He will be truly missed.

My condolences to his family and those of you who knew him. Sounds like quite a guy (ATV and ham - what else is there?). It's obviously a loss to both of those communities as well as more. Very sad news.

Guys...I know things are tight these....but I think anything can help.

Memorial Fund

The family could use some monetary assistance — Dennis gave freely of his time and resources, but was retired and living on a fixed income, with a very tight budget. Funeral expenses have been non-trivial.

Donations may be sent be U.S. Postal Service directly to:

Umpqua Bank

3880 El Dorado Hills Blvd

El Dorado Hills, Ca 95762

Deposits can be made at any Umpqua Bank (see www.umpquabank.com for locations). Make your check out to the Dennis Mayer Memorial Fund.

If you have questions about this Memorial Fund, Account #991435884, contact:

Randy Burleson, Fund Executor at (916) 223-1608

Cathy Whitten, Account Manager at (866) 486-7782

Celebration of Life

Dennis didn’t want a big funeral or memorial, where people are sad and mourning, but with a heart as big as his, and such a huge number of friends and family, it makes sense to come together, so Dennis’ family has approved a Celebration of Life gathering at the Placer County Fairgrounds (map at http://www.placercountyfair.org/Associa ... tions.html).

This will be a casual Celebration of Life gathering with pictures, slides, and short speeches to remember Dennis with laughs and smiles. He loved his friends and family, and he loved the Rubicon Trail and four-wheeling — and he pursued all these with energy and a smile. You can speak up and share, or just listen, smile, and laugh along.

We’ll add details as they become more clear, but reserve some time Sunday, December 14, starting at 2:00 in the afternoon and running for a good while afterwards. Stop in and spend some time with Dennis’ family and friends. The Auburn Jeep Club (AJC), Friends of the Rubicon (FOTR), Rubicon Rockheads club, and Rubicon Trail Foundation (RTF) will be working together to present an upbeat gathering that would make Dennis proud.
