CalStar Life Flight Membership
We all love the outdoors and even though it doesn't seem like it, but we do put ourselves and our family in potentially dangerous situations. A fun weekend, can change in an instant from an accident, medical issue, snake bite, etc.
On a simple trail ride, one of our riders missed a turn while turning his head back to check on the rider behind him. He sustained a compound fracture of his femur....serious stuff.
We used a Satellite Phone to call the Sheriff.
In less than 1 hour from the accident, he was at the hospital in Reno.
All it takes is split second and anyone one of us could require Life Flight...and it's NOT cheap. The bill for Life Flight can range from $5000 to $15,000 depending on the distance required. Most medical insurance policies do not cover Life Flight....so you're on your own. One thing that we discovered the hard way, is that you can protect yourself with a Life Flight Membership.
Around our area, the two main services are Enloe and CalStar. Since they share services, joining one automatically gets you service with the other. Read the two sites and check their areas and sharing agreements to find the best one for you. CalStar is the most convenient to join, since they allow you to do it online.
CalStar is $35 per family. Use the GROUP MEMBERSHIP and use FOTR (Friends Of The Rubicon) as your Group. You can put my name as leader.

Recently, there was an accident on the Rubicon on Cadillac Hill. Due to Ham Radios, it was only 16 minutes from accident to Helicopter landing to recovery. My friend Tim saw it leaving...and in his words....was HAULIN' ASS!

I had a conversation with the Lt. Sheriff for the El Dorado Sheriff Office today, and the topic of Life Flight came up. He's in charge of Search and Rescue operations for the area around the Rubicon. He said many of the deputies belong to CalStar and he highly recommended it.

Life Flight Costs and coverage
Three people I know that were life flighted out of various areas (Soldier Meadows and Yuba River) were reimbursed by their medical insurance companies. All three had different medical insurances. Ranged from $6K for Yuba River to $12K a piece for 2 out of a canyon South of Soldier Meadows to Reno.
Photos and Videos of the crash site and victems can be view at:

More important thing to consider is communication with the civilized world. SatPhones are the way to go. If it wasn't for a SatPhone the two in Soldier Meadows would be dead, and possibly my wife along with them.
