Exactly. My wife and I had talked about it before...we rented one for the Dusy ride...but realistically...the only reason we had it was because she had 4 escrows closing and wanted to check on the kids.
A day ride...I would never rent one.
The phone itself is pricey, at $500-$600....but the killer part...is the MINIMUM monthly bill...it's $50 per month for 50 minutes.
But...given how much I ride...how much we camp and skil as a family, it's worth it.

In light of that incident, NVATR is also going to buy a phone for the group rides. Dunno how it will work with the smaller informal rides, if maybe we'll have some sort of check out system. I don't think the idea has been thought out much past "we getting one, asap"....

That's the plan I have Ken. If reception is very critical then the Iridium ophone is a must, but much more $. We have two phones and both occassionaly go weak on reception. They tend to be sensitve to obstructions. I figured to go a little cheaper and don't mind wandering a little to get the reception. I would recommend the plan where you pay by the year. That way minutes don't expire at the end of the month....they accumulate throughout the year. Very handy for a seasonal user where months may go by that it's not used then followed by heavy use.
I wasn't trying to be a smartass with the priceless comment..it's just that they cost a lot.

I'm just buying my own.
Figuring out who "owns" the phone and how the monthly bill is going to get paid and who's FICA score will be in jeopardy... Collecting money every month to pay the phone bill...is too much hassle.
2 people riding different places....both want the phone....or an argument (trust me..it's happened).

The only real advantage of the Iridium is, if you take your ATV riding in the middle of the Pacific Ocean...you'll be able to make a call.dp wrote:That's the plan I have Ken. If reception is very critical then the Iridium ophone is a must, but much more $.

I didn't take it that way. Considering what we got done with it, it really is priceless and I thought it a damn fitting comment.dp wrote:I wasn't trying to be a smartass with the priceless comment..it's just that they cost a lot.
We are starting a new home up highway 20 above Nevada City and there is no cell service up there, so this all kind of went hand in hand with that. 50 minutes is a lot for me and being able to roll them over will be a big plus when we start spending more time up at the house. Hopefully, I'll never need it in an emergency.

I chalk it up to the logic that when you have it, Mister Murphy has to find something else to mess with.
Our tool kits keep growing every ride as we encounter something new that has never broken. Ironically, now that we have the tools to fix previous breaks, we don't see them any more... Funny how that is.

I think the new plan is....Take a whole quad for spare parts.Rogue wrote:Our tool kits keep growing every ride as we encounter something new that has never broken. Ironically, now that we have the tools to fix previous breaks, we don't see them any more... Funny how that is.

ACR TerraFix Personal Locator Beacon
http://cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?
I guess Cabelas doesn't allow linking
You can find the item if you search for it on their webpage....

What would be funny...is accidently pushing the button....riding your ATV...suddenly, having a copter showing up during a pee break....
