**URGENT*** Polaris ATV engineers.

Postby Chadd » Mon Jun 27, 2005 2:23 pm

We have a meeting with two polaris atv engineers tomorrow. They want goods and bads on the Sportsmans. What are your complaints? What would you like to see changed? Any input would be nice...

Gripes?

Clunking noise in the rear
EBS only on 2 wheels. They should have a button, to lock all 4. I can do this doing the "trick"....why not give me a button to push.

I already have those written down.. EBS noise is number one My 700 EFI is horriable. Have you seen a Magnum 500 RMK? It had 4 wheel EBS. They used a Visco Loc front Diff just like Bombardier uses. What about a shift on the fly high to low range? That would be sweet.

Thanks for the input

The same enginners will be at my local dealer in Reno on Wednesday and the owner invited me to come by and talk to them. I plan to relay what you guys have already said plus some of my own comments...

- Weak-ass single-lever brakes
- Touchy throttle control in low-range
- Leaking rear storage box (should be sealed together rather than just snapped) -- your stuff gets wet when you wash it
- Would like a clock built into the digital display
- For that matter, lose the analog speedo in favor of digital
- Want high and lowbeams on with HI switch
- Better tie-downs for front rack (e.g. flat packs), including ability to stack multiple flat packs without them contacting headlight pod during turning
- Larger lock-n-ride rear cargo box
- The 800 feels overgeared even in High... like the motor never really gets to make use of its torque because of gear multiplication
- A better CVT system that doesn't burn belts, like Yamaha's setup

I'll have to write all these down myself to show them...

YES!! Shift on the fly to low...would be nice. I think they probably do that...to prevent nimrods from over revving and blowing the engine.

I just thought of some more.

Make 3 WAY head light..button. EVERYONE mod's this....pump up the alternator a bit...if that's their worry.

Make the REVERSE button...lockable. Like..when you push a button, and slide over the lock. Another VERY COMMON mod these days to disable this moron button. Give us more skilled riders, the ability to keep 4wd drive on. Have THEY ever tried push their ATV in the snow...work the throttle AND the yellow reverse while pushing? It's impossible.

ok, I know I have only ridden the Polaris around the yeard, but I have ridden with your guys enough to know a few other short falls. . .

1) Having to step on the foot brake to shift into gear. I know Ken has bitched a few times of having to shift to a low gear cause he was stuck in the middle of the stream. that cold water running into the boot is not to nice for the socks and foot rot.

2) Brakes on the quad seem to be a little underpowered for what it is running. I know on my other ones I saw a little better braking power. Now this could be cause the brake arm is a hard plastic and my honda was metal and I can realy bare down on it if needed.

I will second or third the,

headlight mod,
the clock,
the reverse 4 wheel drive lock in switch thingy,
and the EBS on all 4 wheels.

As for the brakes, I think they are fine! (brakes are for pussys)
I have yet to burn up a belt, so I dont see a problem there.

Other than the changes that they have already made since I bought my 2002 700, like back up lights, I am happy.

Three thoughts come to mind,

1) Boy am I glad I didn't buy a Polaris! That's a good list of gripes.

2) I just want to see all wheel engine braking. Watching you guys go down the slabs with your rear tires sliding and breaking loose made me feel a little uneasy.

3) Foot Rot. Yeah, it's not a pretty thing.
Rincon that's dialed in.

Junfan:

There will be a 500 EFI for 2006.

Lizard:

Okay, and here are my gripes about the Rincon, since I owned one:

- No low range gear, makes riding slow, technical areas a lot of work
- No locking front diff, makes riding slow, technical areas nearly impossible
- Not enough wheel travel or suspension articulation
- Grossly underpowered for a 650
- Motor doesn't sound good at all; sounds cheap and like a lawn tractor
- Tiny racks
- That transmission as GOT TO GO, it's a freakin' JOKE
- Takes forever to fill with oil after a change
- Stupid cartridge oil filter design, put a standard spin-on type on it
- No trailer hitch standard
- No skid plate protection at all
- Stock front bash plate less effective than aluminum foil
- Stock tires complete and utter crap

There's probably more, but that's all I can think about right now...
