ATV Trailer Loading/Unloading Advice

Postby avejoe » Tue Sep 08, 2009 9:55 pm

Always make sure you close the latch on the ball when you hook up your trailer. Even if it's just to pull your trailer out of the garage and into the driveway.

You might forget it's not latched and later in the day decide to pull your quad off the trailer. At which point once the quad weight shifts behind the trailer axle, the trailer might tip back then shoot forward putting a big dent in your brand new truck's tailgate.

I sat there for about a minute, on the quad, behind the trailer, quad on the ramps, ramps flat on the driveway, thinking to myself, "I don't beileve I f'ing just did that".

Dave....don't feel bad.

I did it last year with Scott...standing the trailer, as I drove into my garage....I turned around and burst out laughing as Scott was high in the air.

And then I did it Monday.....I put the hitch on....didn't bother to latch it...since I was "only moving it out of the car port"....then later took off the ATV closer to the hitch....and WHOOOP...up in the air it went.

Unfortunately...after losing 45lbs....I can't make it go down without jumping now.

Hell - I do that almost (ALMOST) every trip to mina - I think I have a standing order at the trailer shop for replacement lights.

OR - you connect, think you have everything secure, drive over to your friend's house 3 miles away and halfway there realize the latch wasn't REALLY connected to the ball and watch the trailer swaying like hell behind the truck as you drag it around by just the safety chains.

I'm just saying.....

I've come close-just ended up as a cherry-bump. I hit the brakes just in time as I pondered what to do next...to get the tongue back down I needed to move the quad, but on the other hand, I didn't know where the tongue would land. So I set the brake and moved the truck, put the stand down and let it crash down. Other than no longer having a foot pad at the bottom of the stand, everything turned out OK.

Its times like these that remind us that our brains like to take small vacations every now and again.

I've been told I joke around too much.
So one day I tried being serious.
Everybody laughed!
